Why I want a fast shooting repeater
« on: October 21, 2009, 02:34:56 PM »
Am going to visit a friend and we will be shooting blackbirds. Will try attaching a couple of his photos to show what we are facing. Don't know that there are enough pellets in the US to nail all these birds. They are pests that take a big bite out of the farmers profit margin. The birds he photographed are raiding sunflower fields. Both oil sunflowers and confectioners sunflowers.(the ones you eat at the ballpark). They fly in massed bunches and can do a lot of damage to the fields. All his neighbors who raise sunflowers have said 'shoot all you want'.

After a bit of this I will probably be looking into an air tank system.

Drozd blackbird with full auto 1200 rpm mod , HPA 1200 psi bottle, high power battery , 20+ inches barrel , 400 rounds of  daisy bbs
.

bb are steel shots and are not as polluting as lead shots.

Cleaner ammo for farms...  I would not want to eat products contaminated with lead from any farm.

We had 'spray & pray' shooters in the Army. Go through an entire clip instead of controlled short bursts. Too much watching movie machine gunning.
I would rather shoot controlled and hit what I aim at. With the PCP rifles and no recoil I can keep on target from shot to shot. Even in massed groups
like the blackbirds I want control to shoot into and through the specific batch I want to hit.

For your purpose, a fast .177 is the best choice, make a virtue out of one of that calibers "failings", it's tendency to "over penetrate".  In large groups of birds, I've been able to line up my shots to take 2 with one shot.  Never gotten 3 that way, but I'm still trying :-).  Works better with harder pellets like CP's, and also the heavier ones.  Around 20 fpe with CPH's is ideal, and that's easily done by most of the more powerful .177 PCP's.  Come to think of it, all my PCP's except my S200 were in that range.  That list includes a B50, couple of Talon SS's, an AA S400, my Cyclone, and the Hammerli Pneuma I currently have.  Later.

THe drozd has 3 rounds , 6 rounds burst modes and selectable rpm (max rpm is 1200 for aftermarket chip) .  I just started with a drozd , but will get a longer barrel (but stock rpm)  to see if the burst pattern is controllable.

Of all the rifles I've owned to date, I'd have to say my AA S200 is my favorite by far.  It's certainly not the most powerful rifle I've owned, but it's so damned consistent and reliable that I can do things with this rifle I'd hesitate to do with anything else.  This is the only rifle I've named, and there's a reason that name is Little Miss Never Fail.  She never fails to hit what I point her at, and that never fails to put a smile on my face :-).  I've taken ground hogs with this gun at 35 yards, one shot, one kill, never needed a second shot.  Then I can turn it down and shoot it as a light match rifle in the winter with a diopter sight.  Shooting this thing off hand really improves both my shooting and my confidence in what I can do with this rifle.  Does that answer your question ;-)?

Regarding the Pneuma, I think it's a pretty good gun that got released at a really bad time.  Had this been released a year earlier, I think it would have been very popular, but coming out at about the same time, and for the same price, as the Marauder has really hurt it.  I also think they should have imported the wood stocked version rather than the synthetic.  Finally, with the Marauder setting the price point, this is now overpriced by at least $100, maybe more.  I got mine used, so I don't know if it was typical, but it was pretty rough when I got it.  Needed a thorough cleaning, some polishing of this and that, and a good lube job.  The trigger also needed some help.  Still, no additional money out of pocket, just some time.  Right now, it's shooting somewhere around 20 fpe (it's a .177), and can easily shoot 1/4" groups at 20 yards, all I have room for at the moment.  If I wasn't so set on having a repeater again, I'd probably hang onto it.  I have an email into Umarex to get pricing on the parts needed to make it a .22, I think only 3 or 4 fairly easily changed parts are required.  This thing has enough power that I think it would be much more suitable as a .22.  Guess that's about it.  Later.

In regards to the Pneuma.  Not only what you said but Pryamyd air is importing the sister rifle that has a great Walnut stock & is a 10 shot repeater for $450.  Why would anyone buy the Pneuma?  The folks over @ Umarex USA need to re-think some things.  It also shows how much they over price products they import.....
