AR2078 Target Rifle
« on: November 05, 2009, 12:02:37 AM »
I am getting back into the 10m game (Gamo Compact on its way) and am thinking about adding a rifle to the collection. I know there are TONS of really nice 10m rifles out there, unfortunatly most of them are well out of my budget, however I kinda stumbled across the AR2078 and it looks like exactly what I am looking for.

If I understand correctly, the AR2078 is part of the QB family, which is essentially a "copy" of the old Crosman actions? For around $200 shipped from Archer it seems like an almost unbeatable deal.

Anyone have any first hand experiance with these rifles?

Thanks!

It looks like a good deal.  I have been tempted several times to get one, just to check it out.

2 other options are:

A used TAU-200.  They come up for sale periodically.  Check out http://www.targettalk.com.  If you get it from a club that is upgrading, you might even get a diopter sight.  While the trigger on the TAU isn't as "good" as the expensive rifles, it is decent for the price.

A used Daisy/Avanti 853 or a new Daisy 953.  You WILL want to do the trigger mods, as the stock trigger is LOUSEY.  IMHO the cheaper 953 has a better target stock (shape and weight) than the more expensive 853.  But it has a shorter 12" LoP than the 853 stock.  You have to use spacers under the butt pad to lengthen the LoP.  But the 853 has a Walther barrel.  The 853s pop up on the used market as well, and for reasonable prices.  Check FATMAN's posting for info on the sights.  The 953 does not come with diopter sights, so you have to buy them separate.

For the AR2078 and the TAU-200, if you shoot a lot, you will want to do bulk filling of the co2.

For $200, I'd contact Mike Melick and get a MM-tuned AR2078A. I love mine. Shoots great. Very comfortable. Mike gives great service.

Here's  Mike's contact info:

Ryan:

Here's mine.  A Mile Melick - tuned AR2078a wearing a custom ambi stock with a cheek piece high enough to actually shoot diopter sights accurately.  This one is a gun safe queen, unfortunately, because I usually shoot my Walther LGR-U now.  About 75 consistent shots from 2 x 12 gram CO2 carts.  Prefers domed pellets to wad cutters, though.  As I remember, shooting around 625-650 fps with CP's.  If you might be interested, it could be had.  PM me if you would like to discuss.
