Grackles and Cowbirds and Redwings...Oh My...
« on: March 18, 2007, 09:52:11 AM »
Yep. I've got em but can't shoot em. Been battling them all day with warning shots. They just wait and come back for a feast at my feeding stations. But I do have a plan...he-he. A few Starlings heard that my CFX will be coming back from CDT's place. So far 1/2 of the flock left for better feeding grounds. The other half will have to deal with the CDT tuned CFX, infin ya know what I mean!

I've got the same problem Greg,

I have this huge flock of grackles, I mean a couple hundred, that swarm down on my feeders and if I don't scare em away they will clean out all the feeders in no time at all.  I may stop putting feed out for a few days and I'm hoping the flock will start looking somewhere else for their handouts.

Good idea Jeff,...was hoping you could have your neighbors take out the flock before they got to me....hehe. And Ed has a good idea too but this is NY....darnet.
This flock is is extemely smart. Half of them split into 2 different getaways. After a warning shot, half of them (50) go to the highest trees in the front yard. The other half (at least 50) head for the highest trees in the backyard. It has been an all day event (7:00am to almost 6:00pm) for the past 2 days. Man I am tired. Thanks for the ideas.

Be careful, Greg.  Far as I know, grackles and cowbirds are fair game just about everywhere, but I think the Red Wing Blackbirds are protected as migratory song birds.  Just a heads up, I might be wrong.  BTW, female Red Wings look a LOT like starlings!
