Ever fall into the possessions trap?
« on: November 19, 2009, 10:02:04 AM »
While considering whether or not to buy the CFX Royal Gene had on the classifieds here, I went over my horde to A) make some room for it and B) get an idea of what I might want to sell, myself. First, I listed all of my guns. Then I corrected the list for one or two I forgot I had. (Yeah, that bad.) Then I pulled and handled some. I think, "OK, I really don't have a use for this one." Then it's "Gee, though, it was a good deal and it is pretty nice." Seems I'm like one of those hermit crabs you see with all the stuff stuck on their backs, accumulating more and more. Run out of room? Easy, buy another safe. Eventually, though, even I have to hit a wall there. Why is it easy to pick them up but hard to let them go? Even the Air Hawk I just sold was like pulling my own tooth, and I really wasn't going to shoot that one, anyhow! Anyone else suffering from accumulitus?

You know, I think all of us "serious" air gunners fall into that trap.  We really need to start an air gun exchange network.  There are enough really nice air rifles out there that aren't being shot that it is a shame when someone gets the "itch" for a new air rifle it means spending a few hundred bucks that would be better saved.  Hmmmm.  food for thought.

Well Red and Tommy,

I have been a collector ever since my father bought me my first coin holder album. I had to fill each and every hole with a date and a mint mark on it.

Well to make a LONG story short, I learned that it was far better to have quality instead of quantity ! And began only collecting Extra Fine or Uncirculated coins, and Proof if available. It was how I collected stamps also, I would only consider canceled stamps if they were very expensive, or very difficult to find.

All this also applies to air guns, you members with large collections of air guns feel that the fellow with the most toys at the end,,,, WINS !

I would rather have only three or four airrifles that I truly LOVE, than a whole bunch that I really like ! Each air gun must fill a niche, just as my coins, stamps, powder burners, and air guns do !!!

However Red, I really like that Gamo CSX Royal in .22 cal !!!! ;-(

Yes, I have succumbed to the "deals" and picked up some stray dogs, although a few have turned out to be rather good. I'm one of those who will blanche at a $500 gun but have little problem buying several that end up costing more. Little things do add up! I hadn't tallied how much I had in my air guns and was surprised it was a good bit more than my rimfires, which I considered my "main" arsenal. Eventually, I want to get it down to maybe half a dozen air rifles. I honestly can't find the time to shoot more than that. Same for the rimfires. Sooner or later, when the kids are gone and the house sold, I won't have room for more than a couple, anyway.

That seemed to be more of an issue when I just had springers.  And even then, I reached a point where I was less interested in adding another shooter to my collection, and more inclined to trade off something that I either didn't like or had lost interest in.  I'm doing the same thing with PCP's.  I only have 3 right now, and those 3 cover a wide range of use and power.  I turn my S200 down to 6 or 7 fpe for indoor 10M shooting in the winter, at the other end of the scale I have my newest acquisition, my Evanix Renegade Carbine doing almost 40 fpe.  In the middle is my Hammerli Pneuma, and like most middle children, it spends a lot of time being ignored :-).  Of the three, the Pneuma will go first, the S200 I plan on being buried with, and the Renegade falls somewhere in between.  But at the moment, there really isn't anything seriously on my wish list, so nothing is going anywhere for awhile.  Nor do I intend to add to the collection.  I'm not a collector, I'm a shooter, and if I don't shoot it, it doesn't need to be here collecting dust.

I like Tommy's idea of a gun exchange, and in that spirit, I'd put the Pneuma on the list if anyone was interested.  As an exchange, I'd like to try out a BSA PCP, a vintage match rifle, and I'd still like to play with a big bore.  Not sure how you'd equalize values with an exchange, Tommy, it was your idea, how about fleshing it out a bit?  Of course, I guess we'd need to know if there were enough people interested to make it worth while.  Maybe it's time to post my very first poll....  Later.

Dave

Tcups... I am talking about myself /// In my other hobby 'HAM RADIO OPERATOR' that I have spent $17,000 in just 5 year NOW I am not using the radios, neither the antennas. With the rifles in just a year I have spent $6,200 until now.    RIGHT NOW I just  OWN 4 air rifles and 2 pistols. I started to buy like crazy and sale at the same time, BECAUSE I DO NOT FELT HAPPY for any reason.  Now... WHEN I start to see more rifles to buy here and there, THERE IS A PROBLEM in me. I have been without shooting over 3 week right now ... I am in EMOTIONAL STRESS...  when that happen.... I DO NOT LOOK AT ANY WEP-PAGE of air rifles, JUST START TO DO OTHER THINGS or go to shoot my rifles.... yes USE the RIFLES do not buy more rifles, SHOOT what WE own  very shinny BUT WITHOUT been very well used.  We need few rifles but trying to own too many is SICK, and that it is not good for any person.  It is better to start to trade and better to shoot more than buy more//  GOD BLESS YOU ALL, GERALD

[ I have 15 now ],My wife told me to sell two of my trucks that I didnt use, so now I'm down to the last two.I have more camping gear tha REI sold last year. I have ALL of the 4x4 truck magazines I bought in High School..My garage is full.I have been thinking about selling stuff off to buy more Airguns, pellets and rimfire / centerfire ammo. I do love my airguns. I want more of them, but I have no desire to buy any more "real" weapons Is that weird? O.K., I do want a 12 guage riot gun for home defense.

The question,  " Ever fall into the possessions trap"?.   As it applies to me the answer is, No.  I guess it may be because of the way that I grew up.  I and my siblings  never had nothing and we  had to fight hard for that.   Another factor was the fact that we moved every 6 months or so. Which made it difficult to have to much. Usually only what we could carry in our hands in one trip.

Gentleman of Fortune.
