Any IPSC Shooters here?
« on: November 19, 2009, 04:55:49 PM »
I watched a meet at one of my local gun ranges over the weekend and I've been really thinking about joining. This whole week I've been thinking it over & talked to the wife about it. She seems receptive!

I've got most of the equipment. I just need a few more mags and mag holders and I'm set. Then I have to take the IPSC holster & safety course. I plan on competing in the limited 10 calss with my 1911 once I get graded.

Is there any pointers that anyone can give me? All of the competitive shooting I've done has been with a rimfire rifle. Bench rest, mini palma and steel silouette. This would be my first time in a practical shooting competition.

About 8 years back I was comtemplating about taking the safety course and practicing and participating in the IPSC events.  But I didn`t because of the expense in ammo.....some of the guys there told me to be half decent, I`ll need to shoot 5000 to 10,000 rounds a year!!!!  At that time I was only shooting about 3000 rounds....an overstatement....a year.  Not too bad if I reload....but I don`t.  That would have been another hobby.....unfortunately I don`t have the time for it.  :o(

Have not heard anyone talk about that for a while. What I can tell you is it is GREAT FUN!   In the late 80's I was big into it (I was never very good).  At my peak I was shooting 1000 rounds of 45 acp per week. It was big fun. The range by my house closed, I got engaged, and like I said, I was never very good so I hung it up.   I still have a IPSC jacket and all my old shooting stuff...

Thank you for the walk down memory lane. :)

Stan, ya never know till ya try!

It looks really fun! I'm lookking forward to starting. I plan on enrolling in next months safety course and see how it goes from there.

If IPSC doesn't pan out for me, then there's as steel shoot every saturday at another range that close to me. Now that I know I like to do! hehe But it gets kinda old as the course never changes. With IPSC, the course changes every stage and meet. So there's always something different to try and overcome.

BTW, can anyone suggest a good set of reasonably priced adjustable sights for a 1911??? I've got a Rock Island Armory 1911A1 with fixed combat sights. They're fine for outdoor practice, but they aren't too good rapid target aquisition. The front sight is a little too low and the rear notch isn't wide enough for my liking.

I don't need to try....I know I would like it heh heh. I've seen some of those guys shoot....most shoot semis.....but a few shoot their revolvers.....and man, they can really reload fast with their speed-loaders!!!!

The gun club that have the IPSC (Indoors.....only 25 meters distance)is only 10 minutes (About8 miles) from my place....and the range that I shoot my .22lr rifle and pellet guns currently, is 1/2 hr. away (30 miles)....outdoors with a 40 yard range for handguns, a 100 yard range and a 200 yard range for rifles, although a few handgun shooters shoot there also.

Have fun if/when you decide to join in the fun.

Sam,  regarding the IPSC shooting.   My brother in law got into this years ago.  Main problem was that he found that he was competeing with others that more or less bent the rules to thier advantage. Example, using guns that could not be bought off the shelf etc.    He also went to shooting the steel chickens and such.  More fun for him.

I never saw much use in this type of shooting  ( IPSC) except as an exercise in  ( gun handling ) shooting and loading quickly.   Quite frankly, if it ain't shooting back at you, it  ain't reality.

Just my opinion.
Gentleman of Fortune.

Hum-bug!

Thanks for the info Mike.

From what I've seen, I think things have changed a bit. There are more rules involved. There's a few different classes and shooter grades. Gun wise basically there's stock, modified, super modified and unlimited. These aren't the actual names of the classes, but you get the gist of it. They also rank shooter based on how fast & accurate they are. A, B, C, & D. The group each class within their respective ranks for a more even competition. Something similar to SCCA racing.

As far as getting shot back at... Well, I got enough of that when I was in the service and believe me. It ain't fun. It's a definite adreneline rush but you don't get the dizzy nautious feeling when it's all done.
