In praise of the QB78 - wolf in sheep's clothing.
« on: December 14, 2009, 07:06:59 AM »

I am a newbe with air rifles but thanks to the Internet, even living here on the fringe of humanity and wilderness, I can look

into a world of possibilities that never ceases to surprise me. I purchased this .22cal QB78 deluxe after much research - found

the wolf in sheeps clothing. When Charlie's tune-up kit arrived, I began the many enjoyable hours of de-burring, honing, sanding

& polishing and was rewarded by amazing power. The RSW Superdomes penetrate 1" pine and 3/4" ply with a sharp crack. Didn't like

the aluminum casting ridges on the trigger casing so did some polishing, but on the inside parts too - smooth as butter and no

creep. Used a greased o-ring on one side of the trigger to keep it from touching the side and now it floats with little

resistance. After some indoor plinking (colder than a witches kitty outside), got to thinking of all those beautiful stocks

people have been creating and posted for inspiration. Found a well-cured piece of Western Maple and after looking at all the

shapes once more, drew something that caught my fancy. Maple is not so easy to work with and the dust does not have the pleasant

aroma of some woods, but it is real tough and does not splinter. The thin connection to the tail-end was tested so that it would

not prove too fragile but in retrospect would have made it a bit wider/thicker - in case the rifle is ever dropped from some

height. It still needs to be fine-sanded and finished, but I am pleased with the result. The great thing is that it does not

require fancy tools and the shapes can vary according to any whim - the QB78 has also lost almost a whole pound - amazing for

such a light rifle to begin with. I can now understand why someone would be tempted to buy another one of these

diamonds-in-the-rough. Oh boy, I think I am hooked ... and it isn't even close to Springtime yet with -38F last night!

Welcome to the GTA forum and family....hooray....another Canuck joining in the fun.  Looks like you`re a master at woodworking and a tinkerer too.  Great job with the innards of the air rifle and it`s new stock.

I came real clost to doing the "full"  bolt modification - the cutoff and insertion of a drill bit piece, but after looking at the bolt-end closely, changed my mind. The horizontal port had been drilled past the side-port opening, much too close to the o-ring seat - to close for my comfort anyways. I read in some posts of the end breaking off at the o-ring seat and did not want to tempt fate - not having a box of spares to experiment with. So I concentrated on opening the side and end ports to the same diameter and using lots of honing paste, rounded and polished all surfaces. I was also concerned that the small drill end may not exactly help direct all pellets into the chamber perfectly (pellets having internal differences among manufacturers) whereas the bolt face supports them all. In the end, it's all about having fun in the speculation and in the I may just have to buy another just to go through it all again - that's the definition of a hobby for me. When I compare the results (the fun factor), the investment costs are really minimal.

I sure appreciate all your responses - been kept away from the workshop the last few days because of the cold (-38F), but with warmer weather on it's way my brain is thawing and ready to try another stock. This really is addictive - all those possibilities for the newbe that hasn't "been there and done that". Finding it hard to interest my wife in considering a QB2078 for my Christmas present ... Any suggestions?

show her the archer airgun site... the prices will be inviting and the fact that she does not have to worry about figuring out what to get you will help... mine is like yours, and she got me a qb79...lol
