Why don't my 1377 make purdy holes in paper?
« on: December 24, 2009, 02:51:22 PM »
When target shootin' with my 1377 it always makes ragged & torn holes in the targets. It makes it hard to score sometimes. I've tried 3 different brands of wadcutters, they all do the same. It doesn't matter if I pump 4 times or 10, they look the same. I've even crowned the barrel and it didn't help. My Benjamin 397 at 4 pumps cuts nice round holes in paper. Any ideas?

or it could be shooting the pellets with a bit of wobble, a recrown without a 90 degree end to the barrel will do it....

My first guess is the same as Mike's -- the speed of the pellet.  Try some better quality targets (Eddlemann) or maybe even shooting through some cheaper paper, like news print.  Standard white copier paper is hard to punch clean holes through.

Place the paper in front of a cardboard backing.

Theres more than one cause for ragged holes, pellet speed generally isn't one of them. Some match rifles shoot at less then 500 fps and make clean holes. Since no mention was made of gun malfunction, pellet speed is probably not the issue.
There are 3 things to look at to start. Pellet choice couldd be an issue. Try several different pellets, see if the gun shoots one better than the others.
The gun itself might be the problem also. Its possible that the pellet is being tweaked when the bolt pushes it past the front breech screw hole. 1377 barrels (along with any other of the 22xx guns) have been long known to have problems with rifling. At one point not long ago rifling was hit or miss, some barrels were good, some had little or no rifling. If possible push a pellet through the barrel and check the rifling marks. The crown should also be checked even though it was recrowned. If not done correctly small burrs that are very hard to see can be left inside. Check it with a Q tip, push it it a bit and remove it. If theres a burr it will catch bits of cotton. While you are at it make sure the crown is concentric and the ends of the rifling are equally clean and sharp all around.
The last thing is poor quality paper. If the gun is set up ok, and has  no mechanical issues, try different types of paper stock. Poor paper won't punch clean, you need good stiff stock for nice holes.
The appearance of the hole is the best way to begin diagnosing the problem.  A good start to see whats going on is use a waxed paper plate. If the pellet is striking the target square as it should, you'll see a nice round hole. If not you'll see pretty clearly how its hitting as there will be marks on the wax and the pellet will make a pellet shaped hole if its going in sideways. If possible post a good clear picture of the holes.

I took another look at the crown, this time under a 8X microscope. I had "rollover" burrs in the rifling where I had recut the crown before. I cut the crown (11*) again, lapped with a ball & lapping compound, polished with a buffing wheel and reblued with cold blueing. This time it's nice and even with no burrs. I shot it some today and it's making much nicer holes now. It should be more accurate as well, just haven't figured out how to make ME more accurate yet! Thanks guys.

If your shooting without a cardboard backing it my tear the paper. I would try that route first.

I also get ugly holes with my 1377 and printer paper targets I use for the weekly matches. After reading your post I tried a single carboard gamo target with the same pellets and same backstop from the same distance and it made perfect round holes every time. I also thought my pellet was going sideways or tumbling but it's just the way that the paper rips before it cuts.

this is something i read about to make perfect holes

* pre heat an oven to 100 celcius or abt 212 fahrenheit

* turn off the power/gas whatever energy source you're using

* put the target in the oven for a few minutes (keep your eye on it!)
