Hornady's .17 mach 2,,
« on: January 07, 2010, 08:28:11 AM »

Onemountain, I am in the same boat on the .17 HMR, I neeeed one.not really, but i want it so baaaad! I already have a .22lr. and a .22 Magnum, but I figured its time for them to have some new friends. So in the future I plan on buying a .17hmr and maybe, possibly, most likely, the .17 mach 2.

Has anybody bought or shot a pistol or rifle in the .17 mach 2, I was eyeballing this as i was looking at .17 HMR's on the net.

Found a few websites that were pretty informative, and plainly just cooool

I have a Marlin bolt gun in 17 mach 2. Old stock, so the dealer was happy to se it go. Same shop did not have ONE box of shells for it!! Ordered a couple bricks when natchez had them for $5 per 50. Very little recoil, good speed (noticable after a 22LR). Bullets do not always expand on chipmunks. Very good accuracy .5-1.0" at fifty on a claim day. The 17 HMR is more powerful, has more range, more ammo available, and costs more to shoot. The little one sure is cute though.

All I know is one of the two is a heck of a lot cheaper to shoot. And, while I was on someone's site (Natchez?), there was a warning by an ammo maker about using .17 in pistols. Don't know which flavor. Google it.

I have a converted 10/17 that shoots the 17hm2.  I really like it as compared to the 22LR.  After having shot it, and read about it before that, I think that as a hunter, the only reason to go back to 22LR is if I bought a supressor.  It does everything the 22LR can do better, aside from maybe extreme long range power delivery(heavier projectile), and price.  It does about 80% of what the HMR will do, for about 50% of the price.  If you look at rimfirecentral, I started a thread in the 17hm2 forum about game taken with it, and it is the perfect small game round.

http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2721433

To be honest, I think that the HMR is only a little better ballistically than the hm2, and unless you want to really try to reach out and touch stuff, the HMR will not have much advantage over the hm2.  The WMR will hit harder than the HMR, if the gun you have is accurate enough, and the hm2 will shoot flat and accurate enough to hit something out to farther than most are comfortable shooting a rimfire.

Buy a box of the few brands there are, see what shoots best, then buy a few thousands rounds online.  That way you can laugh at those that say it's going to die soon.

To me, meaning opinion, like the stuff posted above, will make the hmr the last modern rimfire I will likely buy.  LR, and bought a hm2, and will buy a 597 or the likes in WMR, and an HMR if I don't get into reloading.
