About a month ago I completed a transaction where I traded a nearly new RWS 350 for an RWS 48 that I was led to believe was in similar condition. It wasn't. all sorts of things were wrong with it. In testing the accuracy, it was low and left by nearly an inch at ten yards with the rear sights maxed up and right -- though the groupings were pretty good (.25 C-T-C). I looked at the schematic and made a call to UMAREX and talked about parts. I ended up spending about $40 on things that were missing or were obviously not standard. Most interesting of these was a missing barrel cover/shroud and the sleeve. The barrel underneath was OK, but the bluing was yellowish. But the part being missing left the plastic assembly between the receiver and barrel loose, and a big gap between the barrel and stock. it just looked all wrong, like a great dane puppy...
Well, I got the parts, knocked off the front sights, seated the shroud, replaced the cocking arm pin with a factory one, adjusted the front sight and made a small manual torque adjustment to the rear sight. The gun looked a LOT better with matching bluing and factory parts, and it took about 10 minutes! then I took it out to shoot...and voila! Still .25 C-T-C, but now it was on target with some minor adjustment to the clicks on the rear sight -- DOWN.
I've gone from being ticked off about the trade to being a proud mother hen. It needs a good cleaning to get the dust out of its crevaces, but at least it shoots right and looks right...
I've learned and will be more careful in the future...but I'm feeling good about the repairs and moving into more projects in the following months, so this was a good warmup.
