BENJAMIN TRAIL NP XL ACCURACY
« on: February 18, 2010, 10:34:37 AM »
Well finally after some bad results in accuracy, found out the center point scope they included was bad. I put on a leapers 3x9x40 mildot, less than 60.00 scope, now it shoots. In my basement at 20 yds I am getting 3/8 groups with JSB exact jumbo heavies 18.1 gr. They seem a little more accurate than kodiaks. The energy is pretty much equal, but the pellet is faster and shoots flatter. We should be getting more feedback soon, they are all shipping from pyramyd air. Anyone shooting the normal trail np with shorter barrel. So with a little time and hardly any effort, this gun is becoming a nice shooter, especially with the grt III trigger, thanks charlie!

Nice basement! Great groups with the heavies. Not a big deal, but to bad about the scope, I'd heard that they were OK. I'll be interested in seeing if it gets fixed. Hope that mine works when it arrives next week. Did it not hold zero, fail box test?

Gene,
"So tell me Paul, How did you get the new Benji Trail before I did . Are you related to Crosman????? "

Don't I wish !!!   No, so far all I've got is a key board covered in another layer of drool everytime I see the picture of a Trail XL.

Hope to push the button for one soon though.

Paul

How is recoil on these? I know they have a smooth cycle, but, before all of the Crosman Nitro hype, a lot of gas ram owners commented that their guns actually had a bit of a harsher piston stop. If so, maybe those Centerpoints aren't quite up to it. I bought a 4X16X40 at WalMart, intending it for a 54 (with Dampa mount) but held off after seeing posts that it's more of a mid-powered scope. Was the combo scope the same model?

I understand that the same scope used on the NPSS will be on the new models. Not totally sure but that is what I have read. And for sure I would not put one on my 54 either Red. Leapers or something comparably stronger. Even though the 54 feels like there is no recoil it actualy does..:)  That is one great shooter though...:)

I bought a SuperStreak with a CenterPoint scope on it and my friend bought one also.  Both rifles blew out the CenterPoint scopes.  I'd hazard a guess that the SS and the NP XL are way too harsh on CenterPoint scopes.

Well, my TRAIL XL shipped yesterday as I'm sure many others did. If, these scopes are not up to the task the boards will be full of reviews that are real world, and make the CP brand hard to sell. I'm already suspect now because suntz had to replace his CP on the only Trail XL that I know about. Regards

Most of the scopes that the manufacturers put on these new air guns are mostly junk. Sure they would be good for a low powered springer but for the most part they just will not hold up on the shooters they come on. That is why I always look to see if a new air gun is being sold without the scoope.. It is mostly a marketing thing and it fools the new air gunner in thinking he is getting a good deal...:) In reality you get most of the time a nice gun with a low end scope.

No doubt Gene you are correct as usual, and I was under no illusions about the "package" scope. Hopefully most of us will have the same excellent results as suntz with the Trail XL with the possible exception of the scope. Since as a group we tend to make our thought on bad product known it may not be as good a deal for CP as they first thought. I really like the scope rail, and have plenty of rings/scopes to stick on top. Better as you said than an OK scope on a bad rifle for certain. Regards

First I thought it was the mounts they gave you, so I put a better pair on
the rifle still shot all over the place. I was at Jim stanis's shop
and we thought it might be clipping, so we removed the shroud and shot with
just the barrel and no end cap. Same bad results, so we took a leapers off the shelf to try.
After a quick sight in the rifle was starting to group. We then sat
down at the bench with a nice bag for a rest. Then we started shooting
really good groups, only thing that changed was the scope. The shroud was back on this time also
good news, there wasn't any clipping. So in my humble opinion, the scope is crap and so are the mounts. I would upgrade both if you have accuracy issues. Also it was hard getting the objective clear in the scope.
They should charge a few bucks more and ship it with a hawke AirMac

I checked out the CenterPoint Optics 3-9x40AO scope on Pyramid air and there are 29 reviews from people who bought them. 22 people gave it 5 stars and 6 gave it 4 stars. Most of them had them on springer rifles and said it was a very good scope. Jim Chapman did a review of the Trail XL on his American Airgun Hunter site and said the gun has much less recoil than traditional springers. He also said in another thread that the scope is pretty good.

Maybe the CP scope that comes on my Trail NP will hold up, if not I buy a better one.

suntz, when you say the mounts are crap are you referring to the rings? I bought the Trail because of the intergral scope mount, knowing I could then use any "weaver" style rings. I actually like the Burris Signature weaver style rings so that I can use the shim inserts to center a scope. Regards

It may very well be that I just got a bad scope, and yes you get the scope anyway, if it works you're golden, if not, get another, either way, it is still a good deal, maybe even crosman will swap it out, I didn't try that. Also by the mounts I mean the rings, there are better ones for a few bucks out there such as the leapers or hawke. Any brand name will be better than what comes with the gun, but hey if it works don't fix it just enjoy it.
