SC members, help ID a bird for legal kill.
« on: February 18, 2010, 05:08:05 PM »
For the past 5 years I have been over taken by wood *_*_*_*_*_*s.They have a red head, with the pointed feathers on the back of the head, that they raise and lower. They are mostly a medium gray, with a light gray chest, and belly and white streaks in their wing feathers. They are super fast and have spastic motions, even when boring into wood.Does this sound familiar, and are they fair game? They are killing trees around me and seem to prefer trees that are dead, probably cause the wood gets soft.Last year I didn't see them at all. This year they are already coming back with vengeance, and it's not even spring. In the past I avoided taking them down.I tried hanging aluminum foil baking pans in the trees and perching fake owls on the limbs.I am at a loss, other than lying in wait and taken them down.

I really only take small game that are a threat. We've had a rash of rabid raccoons, opossums, feral cats, and dogs.We have to report those to animal control for testing. At least three families in my area have had home invasions. At least one person in each house hold got bitten while trying to run the animal out.All were captured or killed and test came back positive for rabies.

Bro' Ben, Somehow I don't think these birds are legal to kill under SC state law. For one thing, they are a native species. I have them around my place too. But, there may be an exception to the law if they are in fact becoming a nuisance, or causing property damage,...such as in the case of squirrels. Your best bet would be to call the SC DNR and ask them. If anything, shoot at them and miss on purpose,....say below where they  perch on the tree.  If you scare them off enough, you may drive some of them away. Most animals are creatures of habit. Get them in the habit of being shot at!!!! tjk

There are no woodp3ckers that are legal game, regardless of your state. If they're working on the trees, they're not the cause of the damage, but rather the bugs in the trees are.

I have seen them do a number of wood siding, however, and you might have a special dispensation there. Otherwise, no go.

I have that exact same bird in Tennessee.  They are just a variety of wood*_*_*_*_*_* so "no go" on the shooting.  I do think though you can call you state game department.  Usually TN doesn't care if you are shooting critters that are damaging your property.

I usually try to not tell folks their business, but I think we could lose the "p3cker" word filter. I mean, how many times have we seen someone use the term in a manner NOT related to birds? :D

I'm just sayin'...

I thought you guys were so annoyed with these birds that you were calling them all the names under the sun! In fact some of them sound quite good in my imagination! It's only just dawned on me that p3cker has another meaning! Oh the joy of being a bit slow in the brain dept.   :p

Thanks guys.I'll visit my local DNR guy.I've plugged their holes with no luck. They bore into the tree so far and so fast, that it breaks the flow of water to the upper section of the tree causing it to die.In two days, they had a two inch hole in my oak tree, with a basket ball size opening in the tree.It was just above the fork,in a 16 inch thick section.Killed it dead.It seems they like to stay around 15 feet above the ground. They have also bored into my utility pole that my power meter and main breaker are mounted on.

I also agree with the filter for p3cker.I didn't even think it would show up blocked.

I couldn't get the pics to post so I posted the links.Sorry my digi cam got lost and all I have is my crumby cell cam.

I forgot to mention that my area is considered a rural area because we were surrounded by farm land and pastures. Now it's all most all housing developments.

midnight,

woodpeckers don't make holes because it's intrinsically rewarding. They're also not particularly industrious, so they are not going to be up for making a nesting hole in healthy oak. They like dead and dying trees. For two reasons: it's easier to make a hole in a dead tree and there are no bugs (i.e. food) in live healthy trees.

Almost assuredly, that oak was dieing from one thing or another and was infested with beetle or other larva.

I don't think the woodpeckers are causing the problem, they're an indicator of a bug problem.
