CFX Barrel crown
« on: February 23, 2010, 10:42:17 AM »
I removed the muzzle break just to inspect the end of the barrel to find a very surprising and yet poor design that could contribute to small accuracy issues the barrel has no crown in fact it is recessed inside and was drilled with a round headed bit off center making a crown not at all the pellet would most definitely be in contact with half the barrel on one side with a good size gap on the other and with this design there would be nothing one could do to resolve this without cutting the barrel back which I will not do any suggestion.

You can't order a new barrel from Gamo.

well I had a local gun smith look at it yesterday that I know and he was very sure that the only fix would be to cut it back flush and recrown but would have to figure out a underlever clip. I think I will proceed with finishing the tune and if I can not achieve the accuracy that I believe this gun should do I may take his advise. as far as how did it shot before it never held a tight group 1 inch at 20 yards on a indoor range on some occasions it has done better .this gun seem to have held a tighter group when I first got new and has gone down hill ever since and I to do believe this will my last gamo.

Do a search for Kiwi's post on chopping his Kral. It's a copy of the CFX. He should be able to guide you through it. Curious. Was it shooting more to one side than the other? Any particular pattern? How many different pellets have you tried? Assume you are shooting offhand.

I do shoot off hand but also often just lie the front across a Caldwell sand bag on my shooting bench. I have tried just about every brand and weight pellet pyramid air sells and the gun seems to prefer the beeman Kodiak double gold 10.6 G the best of all providing the most consistent group of around 3/4 at 20 yards. I may be jumping the gun on a barrel issue this gun is the same one that had breech seal issue which lead me to find the piston seal with a large chunk blow out of it and recently had gas ram installed. tonight I will be done and shooting it for a while maybe it will be fine the gunsmith I showed it to last night is a family friend and has preformed barrel chops and recrowns on many fine target rifles and today I fabricated a piece for the end of the barrel that would give a nice finish and a means of under leaver clip if I decide that it needs it. one question after a total tune like this breech seals ,piston seals , honeing , deburring and gas ram is this gun going to require allot of break in time.i also might add that i keep posting 3/4 as it's grouping but this is it's most often reproduced group there have been times for a five shoot group to nearly be hole for hole right on the mark at 20 yards but doesn't repeat itself whether on the sand bag or in my hand the same results. i know this gun will do better i can do better with my savage 17 at 200 yards.

One holers at 200 yards? How big's the hole, LOL! JK. I can't tell you if it needs breaking in, especially with the gas ram. Most springers require some shooting to settle in, though.

well I don't shoot 1 holers at 200 yards but could definitely shot 1 inch groups with my 17 at 200 yards. I do not want to get ahead of myself here but I just finished the first round of 50 pellets on my range downstairs and things are looking allot better all grouped under 1/2 inch with h&n barracuda powers 10.1 . I feel like I do not want to get to excited yet for this gun has let me down before.
