Benjamin Trail NP XL .22 Cal
« on: March 05, 2010, 12:20:46 AM »
Hi Folks

I'm new here and would like to say hi to everyone. Ive had my Benjamin Trail NP XL .22 cal a couple of weeks now and ran at least 1000 pellets through it.I dont own a crony but, I can say this rifle

packs a punch. I shot only 2 types of pellets through it Crossman Pointed Premium Grade and Predator Polymags and I get dime size groups 15 yards with both .I have to shoot inside because of the

New England weather is a little harsh this time of year.I put this gun and myslef through quite a work out, no need to go to the gym it takes a bit of effort to cock this beauty. The trigger is rough I

adjust it and got alot of first stage draw out of it but its still rough. So I order a new CharlieTuna trigger for it. The scope, what can I say, just not strong enough for this rifle. It will not keep a

zero just when you think you got it zero in, the next day its off. I am really frustrated with it.Also the front lens ring (I think that's whats its called) worked its self loose actually unscrewed its self. This

rifle needs a much stronger scope. If anyone has a suggestion on a good strong scope please let me know. All an all I love this rifle. It will be a great hunter. Hope I add a little here.

Thanks Ray

Easy enough done but, it Crossman did any kind of endurance tests they find out theses scope just dont hold up with the rifle. Blame the maker not the buyer.

I feel your pain....I just went through the same problem with 2 Centerpoint scopes.  One on the Crosman NPSS and the other on a Gamo Whisper.  The Centerpoints I have just couldn't handle the bidirectional shocks.  You're going to continue to be frustrated with a changing POI until you replace that scope.  You might try calling centerpoint and see if they will fix it under warranty....but personally, I wouldn't use it even if they replaced it.  There are alot better/tougher scopes out there.  Below is what I got to replace my centerpoints...  To fix the problem I got a new Leapers TS scope from PA and it is GREAT!  3x12x44.  Make sure you see the TS (True Strength) rating otherwise with a powerful rifle like your Trail NP XL you'll be going through scopes like a hot knife through butter.  Here's the link to PA for the one I just got...and I love it (it has a 30mm tube so don't forget to get a one piece 11mm dovetail/30mm mount).  What you don't see in the pictures and in the text is the very cool turret lock down mechanism.  There are knurled wheels under each turret, unscrew a couple turns (you can use your hands not an allen wrench), make your adjustment (nice crisp definite detents), then screw the lockers down.  Much better to adjust than the centerpoint.  Also, this scope is that it's only 10" long, optics are very very clear (Mil Dot) and the magnification is 12x.  http://www.pyramydair.com/s/a/Leapers_Accushot_3_12X44AO_Mini_Rifle_Scope_SWAT_Mil_Dot_Reticle_30mm_Tube/818  Here's another one I was seriously considering, but it is 14" long.  http://www.pyramydair.com/s/a/Leapers_Accushot_3_9x44_Tactedge_Rifle_Scope_Illuminated_Mil_Dot_Reticle_1_4_MOA_30mm_Tube_See_Thru_Weaver_Rings/2429  And another for your consideration. http://www.pyramydair.com/s/a/Leapers_Golden_Image_3_9x40_Rifle_Scope_Illuminated_Mil_Dot_Reticle_1_4_MOA_25mm_Tube_Weaver_Rings_Rubberized_Exterior/2032   If you want to read more about the problem I had; here's the post http://www.gatewaytoairguns.com/airguns/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=25730&mid=203499#M203499  Good Luck!...and let us know how you resolved... Hi

Guess I'm not the only one with center point scope problems. I read your post with the problems you had with them. The scope you suggested looks great. How long have you had yours and hows it holding up?

Thanks Ray

I agree with you Ray its not on the buyer its on Crosman, I had a NPSS that didn't work out for me but I'm willing to give Corsman another chance, LOL. I'm wanting to buy the Trail NP model in hopes I get a good one other than that the only other Corsman gun I'll have is a Greg Davis M-Rod fully tuned w/ LWBBl LH conversion in my stable

Hi Mark

I love the rifle. I like crosman to. I just think they should test the scopes on the rifles there going to sell them on for endurance to see how they hold up. I have 4 rifle and had to replace every scope. They should sell rifles with a no scope option.

Thanks Ray

Ray,,, have you tried getting in touch with Crosman and/or Centerpoint ??  If you haven't I'd try that, I'll betcha they will at least replace the scope.  Sorry to hear about your scope problems....

Ray,
I've only had the new scope a couple days.  I got it zero'd yesterday and haven't had a chance to shoot again.  I will over the weekend for sure.  I'll let you know how it holds zero from day to day....my gut feeling is that it will be right on.  This Leapers seems to be very well built.

Ray,
Welcome.

I have the same model gun, but with only about 300 rounds through it so far. Shooting it a bit each day to break it in.

Something you may want to check before you take the scope off. I was suspect of the Centerpoint scope also until I noticed two things. I wonder if  it's similar to your situation ????

1. My gun still smokes a bit burning off whatever lube was in it from the factory. First shot was a real eye-opener !!!!!!
2. When I first fire it at the start of each days session, the POA and the POI are way off from each other. After several shots they come closer and closer to the same point.

Possably....
Oils like to spread out and migrate to  areas of less oil. I think what may be happening is that oil from manufacture is still migrating around in the chamber. When the gun is shot, oil in the swept area of the chamber gets burned off.  Overnight some more oil creeps back forward into the area it burned away in the previous day's shooting session and throws off the point of aim, untill it can burn off more.

Just a theory, but so far it fits how my gun is behaving better than how my Whisper acted when two scopes went bad on it.

Anyway, I hope your enjoying you gun as much as I'm enjoying mine ....... and needing fewer Asprin for the sore muscles.  The beauty is a beast !!!! :D  :D

Good point Airiscool...Ray, I'm assuming that you did all the basics when you got your new rifle:

Run a patch through the bore with Goo Gone, then dry ones until clean.

Tighten/check the two screws at the front side/bottom of the stock and the rear screw in the trigger.

Check the scope mounting screws...and I'd recommend taking the scope off and check the screws that mount the bracket to the rifle.  Be sure to check the center pin that keeps the scope from drifting...it's usually in the center of the back ring (that's why you have to take the scope off) and uses a smaller allen than all the other screws.  If you have Blue Locktite, put a couple drops on each screw on the scope mount and tighten them firmly.  Then put the scope back on and snug it down.

If you found anything that was loose, that that could accounting for your POI drift.
