Good try Jeff... As you mentioied the CFX was incredibly accurate. That is a fact as well for me an my CFX's. The one I generally use is the synthetic one and I keep her in my shop just in case I want to sit on the small shop deck and take afew shots..:) It has served me very well for almost 5 years. Still just as accurate as it was when I mounted the scope on her. I do not think I have changed the setting more than a couple times and that may have been for the wind. At 30 yards she is dead on in  1" circle.

Better luck today...:)

Thanks Dave, I appreciate that  :)

I will definitely take you up on that offer  :)

I never trapped but I always wanted to.  The property I own up in the Catskill Mountains in upstate NY has a stream and a couple of small natural ponds on it and there's  a healthy population of beaver and muskrat that have been left unmolested for 20 years.  There is also of course a good population of raccoons, foxes and even a few mink.  I would love to start trapping on my property but I know nothing about the sport.  I will be spending more time up there now that I'm retired so maybe I'll start doing my reading and research and give it a try on a small scale one year.  It would be fun and interesting.

Yeah I hear you Jeff.  Even the Kodiaks were going Supersonic in my .22 Condor at first, but after I realized it was the most accurate pellet in that gun, I started messing around with adjustments and air pressure.  Finally after some trial & error I got the PW down to 0-1, and started filling to 2200-2300psi.  I managed to get the velocity down to 1,020fps or so every time and where it was shooting very consistently.  You have to make some adjustements to the gun sometimes for that one pellet that you plan on using the most.  I have not tried the JSB 18.1gr on the Condor yet because I figured it would go 40+fps faster than the Kodiak and I 'll be back listening to that little "crack" again coming out of the muzzle.  I really can't go down more on the PW much more, but filling to around 2k psi to bring the velocity down would be beneficial and save air.. but now I have the 4500psi tank and don't care about saving air any longer like I did with the 3k psi tanks.  So chances are I probably won't use the 18.1's on the .22 Condor much at all.  I had not thought this through very well but I just want to try the 18.1 JSB's out of curiosity :)

Sorry to read that that pigeon flew off even with a .177 pellet in him/her...or a pass-thru.

Pigeons are tough birds, I've only recovered one out of about five that I clearly hit.

Jeff,

I've had a similar problem. I addressed it by using HP's and aiming through the shoulder into the vital areas. I've not lost any since I've done that and only one or two required "additional help" moving from this world into the next.

I was using Silver Bears in my Ben/Sher .177. Now I'm using Crow Mags in my BC.

The trick, I think is to hit some bone on your way into the more vital areas. It turns a very small projectile into a large projectile plus shrapnel.

I aimed for the "shoulder and into the body upper body cavity from a 2nd story window. On pigeons a side shot this way was very effective. Much more effective than on starlings, I might add.

They heard!

:D

Seriously, I'm going to bet you were getting over-penetration. I think those H&N's will do the trick, so long as they hit something dense enough to start the expansion and fragmentation process.
