Some more pigeons.
« on: March 05, 2010, 06:08:45 PM »
Tonight I was getting ready to leave our new 5 acres we're cleaning up to build a house on.  I'm aware that there is a flock of pigeons that roost in the steel Butler grain bin on our property.  Well, it was a little after dusk so I grabbed the TF-89 and sat down by the base of a large locust tree 22 yards away as they circled and attempted to land.   I shot at one as it hovered above the lid and barely missed.   About 2-3 minutes later, another small flock of pigeons landed.  I grilled one in the neck and he slid off the roof and hit the ground with a thud.  About 5 minutes later another flock circled for a minute or two and landed.  I shot another in the neck and it slid down the roof and almost landed on the first one.  It was still standing though.  Another H-point smacked into it's neck and it fluttered for a couple seconds then stopped.  I then got up and opened the side man-door and used a Mag-Lite to spotlite some in the barn.  I only had one pellet so I took good aim and greased a third at about 6 yards.  This newly sprung TF-89 really hits HARD!  It makes a definite WHOP sound when it hits and is going clear through.

I went out again this morning about 6:30 but now was armed with a 12 guage Remington 870 with #6 shot.  I shot the first one and saw a puff of feathers but it winged away.  Seconds later another one exploded in a cloud of feathers and fell straight down.  The third shot again drew feathers but the pigeon flew away, albeit in a downward pattern.  I watched where he landed and grabbed the TF-89.  I walked up the road and as soon as the pigeon saw me it took off the hillside and again flew in a downward line.  It must have died from it's wounds.  Not too good a return on three 12ga shots.  Three hits but only one to show for it.

About 8:00 WadeS showed to help work on the property (burning down a barn and removing barbed-wire fencing.  Throughout the day various birds landed around us and in the locust trees.  He ended up shooting three with my TF-89.  One of them was on the other side of the vehicles and I couldn't see it but heard the tale-tale WHOP sound to signify a hit.   Not a bad day of working and shooting.

Good shooting at those 3 pigeons.  Too bad the Remy 870 didn`t take down the other 3 also.
