What choice would you make?
« on: March 24, 2010, 07:22:43 AM »
I’ve been looking at getting another spring gun and there is 2 that I’ve kind of had my eye one for awhile and a new deal that’s looks pretty good. Natchez Shooters lists in their clearance flyer the .177 Gamo 890S w/ a BSA 3X12X50 AO scope and rings for $139.99. The problem is these are out of stock, although they are supposed to send me an email when (or if) they become available. The next one is the Gamo CFX Royal in .22 from Pyramyd Air for $179. The Gamo’s are in stock as far as I know at PA. Then there is the venerable .177 B-26 from Best Airguns with the MM going over. These are $139 without scope or mounts.  I would assume that both the Gamo’s are older stock models with the metal triggers, so replacement would be a snap. The B-26 trigger is nice enough from the box (my .22 cal B-26 was anyway).
Then there are the new Benjamin Trail series rifles (I would opt for the NP model not the XL), but they are just above my self imposed budget of $200. Break barrel, under lever etc, doesn’t matter and I’m open to either caliber. Not looking for a powerhouse, just an accurate plinker, light duty pest type gun. I will scope the rifle regardless of if it has iron sights or not.
So what would you pick or suggest for a spring/ gas ram gun with the budget of $200? I will sell a rifle or 2 to fund this and any other purchases. I already have a RWS 34 Panther so I’ll beat everyone to that suggestion now. : )

Thanks for the feedback

Nathan

Tough Choice you have Nathan, three nice rifles. IMHO, I would vote for the B 26 .177cal, tuned my Mike Melick. I have one from him and his hands are magic. Smooth shot cycle, no twang or vibration, and accurate as well. BTW Wholesalehunter.com has a Benjamin Trail NP wood stock for $188.00 in .22cal, not a bad price......Shoot Safe and Enjoy ........Bill

Ditto to what Bill said. I'd go with the 26. I don't have one, but both my MM B-28's have really been a lot of fun to shoot. I think the 26 is a clone of the R9 Beeman, so that would be a great platform to start on with a design that's proven itself time after time. Good Luck, tjk

I am dealing with that choice myself. I e-mailed PA and was informed the CFXs have the metal trigger. I'm leaning that way but one never knows until it's in your hot little hands. You can also have the CFX gas rammed later and I am very fond of gas rams.

I own a GAMO 890 and 2 CFX's,,,,,  I also own 2  B-26's (one in each caliber),,,,,, that being said,,,,, go for the B-26  :)

Thomas is correct in that the B-26 is a clone of the legendary Beeman R-9.  I also own a .177 cal R-9 Goldifnger and a .22 cal R-9 Goldfinger.  The only reason I mention that is because owning both the B-26 and R-9 I can tell you that the B-26 is an excellent copy of the R-9, and if you get Mike Mellick to tune it for you it just won't get any better.....

Go for the B-26, you won't be sorry..

Not trying to hijack this thread...Is gas-ram more powerful and quieter? I'm thinking about getting it for my .22 CFX down the road. Is the kit sold by PA DIY? I'm no handyman:~(

A gas ram can be quiter and more powerful than a stock metal spring. Can be but not always. I don't think PA sell the Nitro Piston by itself for the DYI'er. I think you have to send your gun to them or order it when you purchase  the rifle and let them install it.

The Mike Melick air rifles always get high marks from those who have them. You know they have been worked over before you see them.
Given your $$$ situation I would look at a TechForce 89. A lot of very good reports on them.

You can get the Trail np .22 from MidwayUSA.com  for 180, 194.59 including shipping. They are in stock now. If that is not what you want I would go with the MM B-26, mine is a joy to shoot.

Two other things  to consider.

Do those Gamos have the new plastic trigger?

And does Midway have a discount coupon going on now to make the Trail even more attractive?
