squirrel's trashing my bird feeders.
« on: March 29, 2010, 03:01:15 AM »
This morning enough is enough I watched for weeks now as a pair of squirrels would devastate my bird feeders  everything from knocking it off the post to chewing on it and not to mention none of my feathered friends would visit with those two juveniles vandalizing there hangout so this morning I sit at my desk and attention goes to the feeder and what do we have nothing but the two vandalists trashing the feeders so I get my new B 26-2 which I spent yesterday getting her nice and zeroed at 30 yards but the feeder is at least 45 yards from the house so one mill should do it I take aim as the one has his Mellon stuck in the feeder hole they chewed out , pull the trigger smack!!! he goes no where but his buddy takes off running for the border, I did not actually think I was going to be able to kill this guy more or less even hit him at the distance he ran off to but at this point anger has a hold of me at that moment so I take careful aim squeeze smack!!! he never moved a muscle.... now I'm pumped that I just made the longest confirmed kill in my air gun shooting career so I go get the range finder to confirm the distance and she says 47 yards to the feeder and 68 yards to where we dropped the second one my longest prior to today was 60 yards and that one took a finishing shot.  maybe my feathered friends will come back now that the two pests are gone and by the way there will be no eating these guys I have a pair of large red tail hawks that are nesting about 50 yards back in the woods from my yard and they have become very knowledgeable of the sound of my guns and squirrels hitting the ground  the longest one the hawk was already on him having a free breakfast  :)  I did get him for a picture before placing him on the hawks plate again.   these are the first kills for my new b26 it arrived last Monday.

Those are 2 fine shots to be proud of, especially the 68 yarder.... excellent shooting and great pics.  Rifle and prey look great lying next to each other.....

I"m sure the hawks are happy with your new shooter too  :)

If they're doing damage then they gotta go,,,, it's as simple as that  !!

As for the hawks snatching a squirrel,,, I saw the same site one time in my backyard as a hawk swooped down and nailed this nutter that was hanging out near the top of the tree and not paying attention...  That was the last mistake that squirrel ever made.  I don't have any hawks nesting within site of my house but I do have a couple that routinely buzz the air space above my yard.  I guess they've noticed that there are always birds at my feeding stations and they've now included my air space to their normal patrol area.  I actually have 2 different kinds of hawks patrolling my yard, one is rather large and the other is much smaller and a different color.  The smaller ones favorite meal is mourning doves.  It waits until there are several doves feeding on the ground and then all of a sudden the hawk dives in at incredible speed and slams into one of the feeding doves.  The result is an explosion of feathers and the hawk standing on top of the dove with it's talons firmly clenched into the doves body.  I've seen this bird score a "hit" several times and each time I just stand there amazed at the speed, accuracy and killing power of the bird.

Good to see that you are puting your B-26 to proper use.    Good shooting.

And as for as Hawks getting squirrels.   Down here in Georgia, the hawks would rather feed on Doves.   Less chance of injury to them.

Great shooting Robert along with some fine pic's of her posing with her harvest. The B26's are just outstanding in the hunting field which is why I have two of em hehehe but still need a .22 to complete the collection. :o  :) Ed

Thanks ED & Bogey ...  I really like my b26 and one thing is for sure the first several shots she sounded and felt wonderful but as she broke in over 400 shots she began to buzz and twange more and then more though this does not seem to affect her accuracy i am used to my gas ram cfx thump and really prefer a solid thump so might be looking into tune info soooooon. also i think the second shot the pellet must have scared that nutter to death or knocked him out because i found no hole unless his mouth was open when i shot.

Very excellent shots at those two vandals...and at such great distances.  Your new B26-2 put the hurting on them.  Beautiful air rilfe and photos.

Hey you got to protect your turf right? My feeder is pretty squirrel proof but the coons still clean it out. Before I got my Gamo I got one of the bandits with a snow shovel. There's another one still coming but I have not seen him since I've been armed with more than a daisy pumper. Next time I think I'll be able to drop him.

i do have an abundance of coons jim but none come inside the yard limits but they are very distructive to my drum deer feeders my trail cams take hundreds of photos of nothing but coons and some times even a half dozen or more at a time on the feeder so this fall i will be doing some night time snipen with my cfx i need to thin that herd also. :)
