Scope Resting Postion
« on: March 29, 2010, 03:29:37 AM »
I read a PA review of Trail scope problem. It said to keep the scope resting in a level position and not with the rifle resting on its butt because it will throw the scope off. I never heard of this. Why would it matter what position the scope is in?

I guess its just one guys opinion. Don't see how it would effect the scopes.

You should be able to hang upside down with your shooter and scope and not have a problem. Wonder if it's a faulty scope from the factory. Ed

Ray,

Is it one of PA's customers that did the review?

As pointed out, it should not  matter what angle any scope is on if it's in good working order and installed correctly.

If the rifle butt is sitting against a solid surface when shot, then I would suspect some scopes would fail or even move in the rings. My logic with this is that the ram has a much higher rate of recoil that is very quick and hard. Unlike a springer which is more of a lazy recoil. . It is a fact that the gas rams are harder on scopes. But in normal use with butt into your shoulder there is a bit of a cushion and the impact on the scope is not as sharp.

Just my thoughts, What do you think about that guys?

This guys saying just standing your rilfe in a corner(storing it ) with the butt on the floor without firing will throw the scope off.

Gene,
Isn't the worst of the recoil going the wrong way to damage anything on the gun if the butt is on solid ground ?  On both my gas ram guns the forward recoil is more than the rearward.  Plus rearward is soft, forward sharper.

No idea what the numbers are to compute the forward recoil, but out of curiosity I used one of the on-line  recoil calculators to get some idea of how much rearward recoil there is when the gun first fires before the  piston slams home.  My Trail XL  shooting  Predators didn't even register. I had to up the feet per second to 1100 fps before it showed the lowest number the calculator can - a 0.01 foot pounds of  recoil. My 12 ga slug gun shooting one ounce sabots is about 20 foot pounds of recoil. That's 2000 times more recoil than the Trail XL, and it never broke a scope.

I wonder if the person who said the guns can't be stood up also tapes over the unused electrical wall outlets so the electricity doesn't leak out onto the floor ????

And I also wonder .... did that first reviewer ever find her guns rifling ????

Actually, I do read some of those reviews for how entertaining some of them can be.  However, the reviews I prefer to go by are the ones I see on this site.

I do not have a way to check the recoil of the gas ram nor the springers. But like I said it is my opinion that the recoil in the gas ram is sharper than the spring guns recoil. I have shot allot of springers and since I have bought the Crosman NPSS and Trail NP, I defiantly do feel the difference. Now if I were to put either the gas ram or spring gun butt against my forehead I probably would not feel a thing...:) But it is my actual shooting of both the gas ram and the springer that dictates my opinion.

I personally would watch what brand of scope I would choose for my gas rams.:)

And I do love your humor Paul...:)
