NPSS Scope Mounting - BKL Pictaninny Adapter/Weaver Mounts
« on: March 31, 2010, 09:56:48 AM »

It is my opinion that the Crosman Trail NP/XL series air guns have a superior scope mounting system. It is also my opinion that the Crosman NPSS has got the Trail NP beat as far as power plant design goes. And again it is my opinion that Crosman developed the Trail NP/XL air guns after the design of the Crosman NPSS. Based on that they made some power plant changes along with improving the scope mounting system, which far more superior than most any air gun made today. And once again it is my opinion that Crosman's motive for improving the design of the scope mounting system is because of the problems air gunners have with scope mounts creeping or moving on the action railsfor years.

Between the Crosman NPSS and the new Trail NP/XL air guns Crosman has come up with what they felt was a good cost effective ratio for producing the new Trail series air guns. But they have skimped on the power plant to give us a better scope mounting system. The power plant is not as robust on the Trail NPasthe Crosman NPSS. If you all have been following my reviews on both the Crosman NPSS and Trail NP series gas rams you will understand what I am speaking of.

Now I have started my first endeavor to improve the mounting system on my own NPSS gas ram by buying a BKL pictaninny to weaver adapter. The BKL adapter is a low profile and the weaver style mounts are low profile. I have included pictures so you all can see what I am talking about with the new mounting system. One of my biggest issues is keeping my scope as close to the action as possible. With this system my Hawk Map Rro 4-16X50 AO Mil Dot is still overt 3/8" off the action. A bit much for me but I will have to live with it until I get something lower in profile or increase the size of my scope from a 50 objective to a 56.

I do not have time now to shoot and give a review on how everything works but I will. This is just the initial setup. One of the big problems is keeping the overall scope length under 15". Other wise there would be problems with barrel breech hitting front ring of scope or scope being to close for sighting with your eye.

All and all I am very pleased with the Crosman NPSS and for those of you that may be interested in one of the fine gas rams you will find that Crosman is now sellingthe Crosman NPSSunder the name of Remington. Also you can buy this gun in either .177 or .22 which I feel is a great option, especially for us paper punchers...:) Unfortunatly the Trail NP/XL is only available in .22 at the moment. Crosma told me that they had no plans yet of making the Trail NP available in .177.

I recently received the replacement gas ram in my Crosman NPSS and installed it.  On the invoice, it's described as "Nitro Piston, revision b," which means that somewhere along the way, there was the original and revision a versions.  The nitro piston that originally came with my gun was losing power having only put ~1000 rounds through it.  So I called up my contact there and he told me to send him my defective one and he'll send me a replacement.  I told him I did not want to send him my gun because I got it grouping real good at 65 yards and I was afraid they'd just swap the entire gun on me.  I also have brass breach spacers in it vs. the plastic ones (that were never installed in my rifle).  So, I got the new nitro piston in and put the rifle back together again.  I put 4 shots through it and I can feel the power.  I need to put it through the chrony and see what speeds I am getting with 14.3 grain pellets.

While at the airgun shop, I happened to test fire the new Trail NP, and the shop pro told me it was shooting 800 fps.  I didn't put it through the chrony, but if my NPSS with the new nitro piston is giving me 800 fps, I'll be very very happy.

good mornin gene !

having used the adapter you have pictured, i also found it raises the optics too far above the rifles bore for my taste. i happened upon these adapters;

( http://cgi.ebay.com/Adapter-Scope-Rail-3-8-Dovetail-to-Weaver-7-8_W0QQitemZ370357734442QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item563b0a8c2a )

and have found they solved my height issues. im now using these same adapters on my discos, b26, bigcat as well as my rimfire rifles.
they have yet to move, i used the mount and locktite for 24hr method,
they allow the use of standard weaver mounts and are nice and low...........inexpensive too !!

****by the way, where did you get that cheekpad ?

Hey thanks Jim.. Ya I looked at those last night. The reviews I have seen are not to good. The guys are saying not to use them on a springer. They are saying the willl move and not hold.But with that said I was thinking of either drilling and tapping a hole for a set pin or making a stop to fit in back of the first one. You are right those would bring the 50 objective down right next to the action. Seems to be right where we like em to sit...:) Thanks Jim

Also you will notice that I have put a riser pad on the comb of the stock. That is because the eye piece of the scope is a bit to high and the alignment is off line with my view and sweet spot. It helps but not a winner...:)
