TX200 or HW97 ?
« on: April 18, 2010, 08:39:46 AM »
OK - I'll admit it, I now have the "addiction" everyone talks about. My obsession is with accuracy, and I've heard an awful lot about the under lever guns. After reading all the positive reviews on these two -are there any negatives I should know about either one? (If I lay out that much scratch for a gun, I'd hate to hear "Oh - you didn't know that?" )
Gotta say I'm leaning toward the TX200

Back in December I agonized for several weeks on which of those 2 guns to get,, I finally went with the TX200 MK III in .177 and I love the rifle to death !!   In my case I went with the TX because it had a slight edge in power and I just preferred the overall aesthetics of the gun.  Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have an HW as well and someday I will add one to my collection, it's just that I could only buy one and I decided on the TX.  The truth is you can't go wrong with either of these guns and both are simply beautiful, quality springers that will delight their owners.  The TX is a heavy rifle and that weight must be considered if you intend on taking it hunting, but I did consider that issue and it didn't bother me.  I've taken it on some long hunts and I'm fine with it, but it is something you should consider.  As for accuracy and power..... I couldn't be happier with the rifle, it's everything I expected and more  :)

I'm sure 97 owners will chime in and give you their take on that gun.....

Hi I have a HW97 in .177 and a AA ProwSport in 22. I like them both. I think the AA are a little better build but both are shooters

Can't speak for the HW97, but I did consider the TX200 and the ProSport which are the same in most aspects. I would have been happy with either, but went with the PS simply because I like the looks of the invisible cocking lever. The air Arms quality is real and LongIslandHunter said it well that they do not disappoint. Fit and finish is perfect, with sweet trigger, smooth cocking and firing. After mounting a Beeman mount and a quick scope zero I shot a very small 25 yd touching group with no drama. I absolutely love shooting the AA and my only wish is that I had acquired one sooner. Hello Mark. Any negatives you need to know about? Well I can't speak for the HW97 'cause i don't own one but I have thoroughly enjoyed my TX200MK111 in .177.The only negatives I can really think of might possibly be getting bored with it's incredible accuracy. You aim, shoot and a tiny hole appears where you are aiming.Over and over. Lately I've been sniping starlings and cowbirds with my TX and I'm 26 for 26 shots taken at the 30 yd LZ. The other negatives? You might think less of some of the other shooters in your stable and therefore not spend much time with them if you get the TX200.It's easy to Love.Join the club.

It's interesting how one or two "TX200 or HW97 ?" threads pop up every month in practically every air rifle forum... from GTA to the Yellow, to AA and SS, it's almost a given that the comparison and question will be made.
This is an indication that the questioner has boiled it down and discovered that these rifles are the best of the best, and now they want to know what others think. Invariably, they will get semi-objective answers from owners of both brands.
The shooters who made my choice easier was Gene SC and WV Scott. They own or have owned both rifles and provided what I felt were the most bias free answers I'd read.

Gene SC: "I own and shoot both often. The HW-97 is my favorite out of the two. But  I love my TX and ProSport just as much. All three are outstanding  shooters and are worth every penny if you want accuracy. They all weight  about the same but just have a different feel. I only shoot off the  bench with these and most all my rifles but for sure they are deadly  accurate if you do your part. Fit and finish is absolutely fantastic."

WV Scott: "I'll tell you what...I bought a tx200 about three years ago and thought  that there's no way the HW97 could equal it.  I had a HW97 about ten  years before that, but it got stolen and I don't remember much about how  it shot.  But now I recently traded for a new HW97K in .22 and as much  as I hate to say it, I almost like it more than the tx.  The thing is, I  don't want to like it more, but I can't help myself.  Maybe it's  because it's a new gun in my stable, I don't know.  The HW had been lube  tuned and my TX is professionally tuned.  Do yourself a favor and get  one of each....doesn't matter which one you start with. regards, Scott"

I own two HW97Ks now... both .177, one being a blue laminate. After a proper re-lubrication to remove the Weihrauch "wet and excessive" lubrication protocol, they are both smooth as glass and insanely accurate. Will I buy a AA springer at some point? Of course I will, but I'll wait a while longer for their present quality control issues to be resolved.

Quality control issues you ask... what quality control issues? If you do some research on this and other forums, you'll notice a trend in recent TX and Prosport purchaser comments regarding component part fitment irregularities and the need to send their guns back for repair. Not saying AAs are not well made... just that a percentage of recent purchasers have had issues. Of course, on the interweb you'll hear complaints more often than you do praise... so you need to do your own research and draw your own conclusions.

Cheers

Just some dude... move along, nothing to see here.

Honestly i dont have a tx200 or even a hw97 but if if you here nothing but positive things about this airgun then it must be a great airrifle cause all of the members that have them are very talented and know there guns so this is an a.r u cant let go by if you have the cash matter as well splurge as for me i cant afford them so i stick with the clones which makes me happy enough cause my b40.22 i bought last week is very impressive and also very accurate ,half the price also but for my usage im content ...sorry to jump in with my clone but i had to put my 2 cent in ...God Bless Us All ...jorge

Thanks for the input. Being a powder burner my whole life and fairly new to airguns (and REALLY new to the forum), I hadn't seen the topic discussed - and this is the first I've heard of QC problems at AA.After reading so many glowing reviews on both- I was really interested in some honest critique on the pair. To be honest - I was leaning toward the TX200, because it seemed most peolple wanted to compare the HW97 to the TX200, but not the other way around.(Just a subtle little thing I picked up on - might not mean squat, like maybe the TX200 has been around longer?) But that's why I asked the question.
I don't post much on the forum, but I read it religiuosly - every day - just trying to gather as much info and opinions as possible. The opinions here mean a lot more than somebody trying to sell the gun, for obvious reasons.
As far as comparing the two, it's starting to sound like the old John Wayne saying - " I'd hate to have to live on the difference"

LOL - not exactly negatives, Progun. If that's the best you can do -you certainly didn't talk me out of it.
