Proud Father
« on: April 22, 2010, 10:52:04 AM »

I was testing some new pellets today in my Marauder and my son came in and was wanting to shoot the .22 rifle. I told him he couldnt shoot the powder burner here because of the distance they go and how the bullet bounces up from the ground after shooting. Always know what you are shooting at and what is behind the target. His rifle has a TERRIBLE trigger anyway. It must be like 9lbs or something. I explained how a heavy unpredictable trigger can throw your shots off. I explained about steady trigger pull and not snapping the trigger. I also showed him the old trick of putting a quarter on your barrel and practice dry firing your rifle until you can do it without the quarter jumping off. Long story short, after some practice with the pointers I gave him, he was ready to shoot. His first shot he pulled off because my trigger is so light. I explained the trigger to him and walked him through the next two shots. Pull back slowly, now feel the tension start. The first stage has ended and the trigger is starting the second stage and will fire. If he hadn't pulled the first shot, he would have put three bullets in the same hole at 20 yards. My son made me very proud of him. Now I have to get him a crappy rifle so he wont out shoot me. :emoticon:

The first shot was a little low and to the right on the out side of the can.
The second two shots went in the same hole.

I think you should get him his own .22 Marauder  :)

Its a little to much gun for him. He needs something lighter and smaller. Maybe a disco.

Nice shootin'. What kind of rimfire does he have? Those lawyer triggers can really put a new shooter off (not to mention us oldsters). When you talk about dry firing, is that with your air gun? Very few rimfires can tolerate that without denting the edge of the chamber, etc. If you want to get him a really good youth rifle, look for a CZ 452 Youth model. The triggers are great out of the box and can be easily improved further. Plus they are super built, high quality for the money. Even though they have a short LOP and barrel, a grown man can still use it, too.

I just remember the first time my son in law wanted to shoot the springers. I kept telling him about the recoil on the magnums, but he wanted to shoot them anyway.  He plants his eye right against the scope and was rewarded with a nice cut and a black eye. "But they are air guns!" he whined! :D

He doesn't shoot too badly now.  I let him shoot my "girl' gun; the Whisper.  :)  It really isn't a gurl gun; it is by far my easiest springer to shoot.  The gurls like it because it is easy to cock. light, and can shoot the eyes of a bug at 40 yards.  My wife the senior gurl likes the underlever TF 99.

Let's hope he is  future GTA guy!
