.22 Pellets
« on: May 03, 2010, 02:55:22 AM »
Is there a reason why most stores do not carry .22 pellets? Here in Biloxi, MS all you can find on the shelf is .177 and this is in all the stores; Wallyworld, Dicks and Academy Sports. Is there some type of legislation which prevents the sale due to (maybe) the lethality of the pellet? I just don't see that much difference between carrying .177 and .22 on the shelf. If anyone can share some light on this I would be very grateful. Thanks.

Same here, but then most, if not all, of the pellet guns for sale in those same stores are 177 cal.

I gave up looking at Pellet guns and pellets at Walmart, Dicks, or Gander Mountain.

They don't sell very well at stores like that I think. People who watch the Gamo (not putting Gamo down, just saying...) ads on TV are looking for the latest and fastest, which is generally .177, so that's probably what the big chain stores cater to.
Plus some municipalities class any airgun over .18 caliber with firearms, so to avoid paperwork and other hassles some stores just carry .177 airguns and pellets.

I was in a near by Gander Mountain last weekend and everything was .177, except they also caried .20 cal Benjamin cylindricals and .20 Preditors. They had .20 but no .22!! And no .20 caliber guns! Wierd, but at least I have a close by source of feed for my Sheridan.

Here in Chicago I have actually found a local Dick's Sporting Goods that carries some Crosman and Gamo .22 pellets.  Most places in Illinois do not carry .22 pellets because it is illegal for you to have a .22 air rifle shipped directly to you.  You have to pay a store to hold it and do a background check which is an additional $30.  I go to school in Kentucky and most places around there do not sell .22 pellets either.  Actually one store has .20 cal pellets but not .22, makes absolutely zero sense to me.

The Bass Pro Shops near me carry's Many Crosman .22 pellets, the Benji HP .22 , and polymags for the .22, they also have a good selection of  RWS, and Gamo in .22.  They probably have the best selection for miles around. Lawrenceville Ga.

My local Gander Mountain's prices are way too high. Even if they had the pellets I want, I'd buy elsewhere.

I've yet to see a better deal on pellets than the fourth tin free, plus other discounts at Pyramyd Air.

Getting .22 cal pellets around here is no problem - sounds local.

It would just be nice to get some locally for a change. A few friends and I are planning to start a small air gun club and buying locally is appealing to us. Not just for price but for convenience.

Here locally, Bi-Mart sells .177, .20 and .22 cal pellets.  Mostly .177 though.  I don't shop at Wal-Mart so I don't know what they have but I'm sure both .177 and .22 from what people have said.

About an hour away is what used to be Sportsman's Warehouse.  They have at least 25 types of pellets.  50% in .177, 30%-40% in .22 and the rest in .20.  Prices are decent and a great selection, just a long drive.  I usually combine it with a weekend trip.  I usually order my pellets from a "local" Portland, OR air rifle dealer I've become friends with.  Prices are close and I'm supporting a small business with good service.

Southern CA, forget about .22 in box stores.

Walmart is .177 only and not much at that. You will find CP Hollow Points, Daisy Wadcutters, and Gamo Rockets guaranteed to do a jillion fps. On a good day.

Big 5 is a west coast sporting goodschain that will have some decent.22 in stock, but not cheap.Big 5 does at least make an effort, and they are the only chain store even trying in this area.

Dick's is a joke here- you would not know they have an airgun category if you walked into the new store in town. They looked a little scared when I asked about air rifles. Sports Authority is much the same. Great for shoes and spandex, but ballistically challenged... or just obstinate.

The big box stores like Walmart look at "turns" of inventory, and frankly I would bet .22 pellets are pretty slow. Thesporting goods chains are harder to explain, but I don't fault the big W because we airgunners are just not the target market.

NorCal sad too....
Heck, even .177 local options are severely limited in brand and type.
I feel lucky to (for the moment!) get CPHP's at WallyMart for $6.50 per 500.
Anything else, hello Pyramyd....  :-)
