Am I out of my mind?
« on: May 05, 2010, 07:55:39 AM »
Greets folks.
I'm about to lose my mind out here with all the crazy gun laws -- and I may have
already -- but just wanted to check with the gang.

So get this.. I'm in Italy (long story  :) ) -- where:
1. you can NOT hunt with an air rifle.  under any circumstances.
2. without a firearm cert, the legal limit is 7.5 Joules
3. with a firearm cert, you can buy whatever you want (but can only use at a range!)

So because you can't hunt with an air rifle, by "extension" you can't shoot it outside
of an official target range.(which costs money to join and is far away) -- just having it out in the
woods can get you into serious trouble.. cause they just figure you're hunting.  you can maybe
talk your way out of it if its under the legal limit -- but you better have a lot of field targets hanging
around with holes in them.

So since you basically can't do anything with a full power air gun, it makes no sense to buy one.

So here's where the crazy part comes in --
I'm in love with the AA ProSport.
And I can get it in legal version (7.5 J).
And it would cost me about $800 here.

Am I out of my mind even considering getting that thing?
Man i'm having trouble sleeping nights.

I can spit harder than that thing can shoot.

ps.. for whats its worth i'm told the 7.5J (which i think is 5.5 ft-lbs) prosport can shoot accurate
out to 50-60 yards & even better if you're willing to deal with alot of holdover
(and the winds not blowing).

Anyone have any thouhgts on how true that could be?

I think it is doable, but realistically I'd say around 40 yards would be just fine. With an AA ProSport I think that will just be a no-sweat feat for you and the gun. BTW, how about rather relocating to Spain? Just kidding.

Hey, Spain's not much better!  Illegal to hunt with an air rifle under any circumstance . You can only shoot in approved places like your own land as long as it has a wall all the way around and has been checked by the local police. We are allowed up to 24 joules (about 18ftp) so long shots are doable as long as you can find some place which is long enough and surrounded by a wall and that has approval by the local police! You need a license and your gun needs to be registered if you want to take it to a range or to your land (with the wall!), but only in your county. If you want to take it to a different county, you need to get permission from that county as well! Or you just go shooting and enjoy the sport and hope not to get caught!!!

yeah I keep figure'n "what're the odds?" of really getting into trouble.  i mean c'mon, its an air gun right? :)
personally I have no problem putting the cash out for a prosport -- i mean, its steep, don't get me wrong, but
from what I'm told its well worth the investment.

but for a 5.5 ft-lb??  c'mon thats one expensive piece of wood!
to be fair i've never shot a castrated air rifle.  there are people here that live by them, but then
again only shoot targets at 20 yds.

what a crazy world we live in.

thanks all.

Move!

If you don't like the political state you have the choice to leave (for now anyway....)

Here is the U.S.A. I have (and do shot in my backyard) everything from 5 ftlbs pistols to 225 ftlb 308 bigbores. We do have some very strange guns laws here also, but they aint that bad yet.
