What to expect?
« on: May 09, 2010, 08:10:27 AM »
I know this has a lot of variables, but...

What is the reasonable expectation one can expect from a stock Gamo Big Cat 1200 in terms of power, distance, and accuracy?

I did install a GRT-III trigger plate and will upgrade the scope and mounts. I am also searching on a tuning servicing.

Thank you.

My whisper(which I think is same power plant?)shot 3/8" group's at 20 yd's with most topper's & then a flyer to open up grouping(some 1"flyer's)I put them off stephen to bad pellet's until my spring broke at 1500 shot's & when I took gun apart found blown seal covered in shaveing's(gamo part's in my opinion not good)so in short your's should give at least that or better(springer's are hard to learn to shoot well, very touchy)& it would hit swinger's 1 1/2" at 35yd's easy, pen. at 20 in phone book was 5/8" with cphp, but like I said mine might have been bad from get go,but it will be shooting again monday afternoon(tuned by my son, I just watched)so if you want I'll let you know more then?

On most of the new production air guns you will find that the seals have been damaged during production. Almost every Gamo, Crosman, Chinese springers have bad seals from the start. But that can be resolved by replacing the seal with a JM tesla seal or equivalent.

Expect a good base gun to start your tuning hobby. Mine was good out of the box. Shot low 800's with 7.33 jsb. Others were faster but jsb most accurate. After home tune, better scope and grt it's shooing just over 900 but so much smoother. Shooting clover leafs at 35 ft and 1/2 in at 20 yards. Get about 1.5 in of penetration in plumbers putty at that range. It's a great gun now. #3 in the arsenal for me behind my hunter with np and 350. It's a great gun to start with.  I posted all my mods in a strand called big cat must do's. You should b able to search it. Good luck and good shooting.

Expect it to end up on the classifieds loosing money on it lol. Personally for the money I would have purchased the Crosman Storm XT from Wally World. Wood stock, all metal barrel, improved trigger. Just my opinion. I'm guessing pretty soon Gamo guns will be all plastic.

LLH!!!! Dang Jason, you didn't pull any punches on that reply!!! I would have suggested a Crosman G1 Extreme over the Gamo BC,....just a better 'less hollowed' stock with a more solid feel to it. I sold my BC to a friend of mine,..he had it TT'd by CDT, and the rifle is still a loud shooter. Stuffed the stock,...but silicone caulking would probably have been a better insulator. tjk

Yeah sometimes its more of a fault than a talent. I guess what I should have said is... There are several better options for the same money. I've never done well holding my tongue but, I wasn't doing it to be mean. Just being honest and opinionated. :-)

My BC right out of the box was very powerful and accurate...it got more accurate after I installed the GRT III trigger:  3/4" groups out to 30 yards and can put a hole into a soup can at that range.  At 10 meters the .177 Crosman Wadcutter (That's the ones I use in all my airguns for the soup can test) can go through 4 layers and dent the 5th of soup can metal.

After over 4000 shots it have lost some accuracy...might be due to the plastic breech block.  I have read that it could wear out over time and might cause "Barrel sway".  I checked and it did move side to side....although just abit....but enough to cause the groups to open up.  I also checked other metal breech blocks of my other air rifles....no barrel sway.  Two that have were because of the loose barrel pivot bolt.

Btw, the BC is loud....after 8500 shots it's still loud.  Maybe it's just built that way.  So far I have put in a new spring, and will need to examine it's piston seal to see if it's the culprit for the lost in accuracy.  I really like my BC....it's going to be the first one to break 10000 shots for me!!!
