Any pics or videos of honing a compression chamber?
« on: May 17, 2010, 03:19:18 AM »
I've researched the archives and folks talk about using a brake home on the compression chamber for crosshatching. But I just can't picture how this is performed. Anybody have any photos of the tool(s) you used or the process?

So people stick one of these up their compression chamber and spin it around with a lathe or hand drill? Is it one size fits all? How do you keep those narrow stones from hanging up on the cocking slot as it spins around?

Use a hand drill. The compression chamber is between the cocking slot and the transfer port. Don't try and use the hone on the slot. To knock down sharp edges in the slot use a file and or a dowel with sand paper. You can cut a slot in the end of the dowel and insert the sand paper and then add a screw in the other end to use in the drill chuck. Remember in the compression chamber you don't want a MIRROR polish. You want smooth but with scratches to hold small amounts of lube.

For guns using a synthetic seal, a standard brake hone with a grit of about 320-360 seems to work great for me.  If a leather seal, I would then lap it with 600 grit wet/dry sand paper,  maybe even finer if I felt ambitious.  I use a brake hone from an auto parts store with a short piece of rubber gas line on the end to make it a little longer.  I use a piece of 5/8 inch water heater hose with a 2 inch slit in it to hold wet/dry paper for polishing the part of the tube I can't use the brake hone for because of the slot.  I use needle files and Dremel tool on every burr I can find.  Burrs will chew up your seal when you install it if there are burrs left.

And flush the honing grit out of the commpression chamber very thoroughly, or that will damage the new seal.
