As Ed says, maybe something with more power to asure more shock damage and penetration.

When I was just using my 22 Whisper I had alot of runners, flyoffs, and like you just had, zombie birds. I was begining to think the only sure way to get a kill would be if I saw a mini mushrom cloud hanging over the bird !!  :D

Got the Trail XL and now, almost all are DRT. But even then, there can be the occational runner or flyoff. Had one a few weeks ago. Center breast shot with a Predator. The  exit hole in it's lower back was big enough to put a finger in, it still manged to turn 180 degrees  and fly off about 30 yards before it dropped.

I have learned that some Starlings can be tough birds ..or they're just too stupid to know when to be dead ????

That happens often a short while ago a crow layed there for about 5 or so minutes and as i was putting on my shoes he hopped away once in the street he's free no need in chasing him and alerting the niegbors .Like ted nugent says any doubt let him have another round .

Don't get me started on the zombie starlings...

hit 'em twice unless you have a texas head shot. Even then, why not? Lead's cheap.

Had the same thing happen to me this morning, except mine was a Brown headed cowbird. Popped him from about 35 yards and watched him flop over dead as can be. Then shot his mate a few feet away. Stayed put and watched for about 10 minutes, no more came in so I went to retrieve them and was amazed to see the first one roll over and fly of across the field.  Didn't fly very good, so I'm sure he'll be fox food by this evening.

I JUST shot a young sparrow, and had him sit there stunned, then run (and run fast). I had to chase him around the garden before I got him. The scary part is that I hit him basically head on and the crow mag just laid his front open. He was red from just below is wishbone to his tailbone with guts exposed.

Yes, of course a cat would probably find him, but since there was also a chance that Mrs. Bits might find him first while gardening, I had to chase him down. I'm just saying that some of this genetic stock around here is pretty darned tough.
