Killed a whitetail deer last night
« on: May 25, 2010, 06:51:39 AM »
Every day I give thanks to the Good Lord for all the wonderful blessings of this life. Doing so helps to keep me balanced and to keep things in their proper perspective. Last night while driving home about 10:30 pm I hit and killed a whitetail deer with my Chevy truck. I am fine and the truck is actually driveable but will need about $3000 in body work. No problemo. I have another truck to drive while the repairs are done.I used to believe that when drivers hit deer with their vehicles it was mostly their own fault for not paying attention. Especially if it occurs in broad daylight. Now after dark is a different story. In the dark, reaction time can be very limited to go along with the limited visibility. The deer I hit and killed last night was RUNNING across a 5 lane highway. By the time I saw it there was less than 1 second to brake before impact. Really not a lot I could do to avoid hitting this deer. I can count my blessings that the incident wasn't more destructive than what it was. Now I wish I could also give thanks for the windfall bounty of roadkill whitetail but alas i can't. I was in no position to harvest this roadkill due to the recent flooding I experienced in my middle Tenn home. I'm still cleaning up from the mess and no longer have my refrigerator/freezer that I used to store meat.It was in my barn and was pushed over and ruined in the flood. So the deer is a loss but I am still here counting my blessings.

As long as you're still "up & about" - everything else will settle back down. Too bad about not getting that "road kill" though, a real bummer.

Thank the GOOD LORD David, for your safety !

I'm glad that your were not injured in this crash !

Deer can pop out in front of you even in broad daylight, they are fast and unpredictable critters.

That must be one tough truck you have there :)

Glad you're safe!  Had one, on a dark country road, jump from right to left over my hood.  I was doing probably 40mph and he completely cleared the car as my hood passed under him.  All I saw was DEER!  I yelled something rather unpostable, pulled over and shook the willies out...

Glad to hear that you came out of it OK!

My uncle had a mule deer run into the passenger side of his truck once. My uncle was doing 45 or so and the buck plowed into the side. Knocked the deer out cold and drug his feet off because half it's rack was stuck in the doorjamb. Needless to say...We ate fresh backstrap that night! hahaha

We have a lot of deer in this part of S. Carolina and one of the biggest concerns that Sherrie and I have when out night riding our bikes, especially on the back country roads,  is having one jump out in front of us going 45-55 mph or more. Can you imagine.... :0  :0  :0

That happened to a friend of mine. Just a glacing blow, the Deer kept running, but it was enough to flip the bike and totally trash it. He was very lucky. Only got dinged up pretty good, but luckily nothing broken, ....  except his funny bone. He didn't care much for being ribbed about  hitting, "BAM-bi" !!!

Glad to hear you weren't injured, like the others have said that's the important thing !!!

AS for the deer, to bad you couldn't keep the meat but rest assured that it won't go to waste.  I'm sure someone else took it home to feed their family with.  When I was still working this type of event would happen all the time and other drivers would always stop and ask if they could have the deer, of course we were glad to give it to them.  In the rare cases where noone else wanted it we had a list of people to call who would respond out at any hour of the day or night and gladly take the meat.  Sometimes I'd take the deer, butcher it up and then on my day off we'd have a huge venison bar-b-q at the precinct for anybody working that day, the guys always loved that.  I'm sure the police by you do the same thing, so the animal didn't go to waste....   :)

Good to know that you were not injured.   Automobiles and such can either be repaired or junked  after a deer strike.    People however are a different storey.

My daughter in law has had the luck to kill more deer with an automobile than most hunters will ever take.  Thankfully she has not been seriously injured.     Around here when you drive at night you should drive with a higher sense of caution.

On a lighter note,  last deer season at a deer processor's place everyone marveled at a giant buck that was there.   Everyone wanted to know who had shot the deer and where.   The processor told everyone that the buck had been brought in by a sheriff deputy  early that morning  and the buck had been hit by a car. Car was totaled.
