Pellet traps and 1200FPS
« on: May 26, 2010, 09:14:33 AM »
Dose anybody have any suggestion for a pellet trap the can handle 1200fps at 10 meter.
The trap we use is rated for 500fps at 15 meter. We are 500-600 at 10 meters and it held up so far.
But the Girl friend is get a 1200fps gun and its going to eat that trap for lunch. (@10 meter)

Here's a nice pre-made one that uses Duct Seal. Something like this should have no problem stopping the pellets. If you have some wood working skills you can make your own trap. The Duct Seal is available from Home Depot and online. Buying it online may incure some pretty heavy (pun intended) shipping charges.

Use this one at the back of your shooting box and you can pick your flatten pellets after shooting. I have 2 inch thick duct seal and no pellet ever touch my back stop. I believe the duct seal comes in a brick of 1"X8". Try here if you're close to Home Depot >> http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xge/R-100212441/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

This is the one

I used it for 22RF, and if it will handle 22RF, it will not have a problem w 1200FPS pellet gun.
Only thing is being all steel, it is noisy.

Go to army surplus and see if they have old flak jacket. I picked one up and it stops my 350 point blank. I put part of in an old ammo can and it make a perfect trap. Nice and quiet. I hung it on 2 fishing pole holders last sat and put my targets in front of it, you could barely hear the impact. It's nice.

Or a 10 lb bucket of plumbers putty. No way you'll get through that and it's about 12 bucks.

Try this Champion.22 bullet trap. I have one in my shop that has thousands of rounds fired into it with some of the most powerful air rifles made with nary a whimper. The only thing I've ever damaged is the metal clip which you can easily replace at an office supply place like Staples.

I've been shooting my Career 707 .22 at about 1200 fps into my traps no problem.  They have about 1 inch of duct seal in them.  I've had no problems.

Thanks guys,
I saw the Duct seal target on-line and started to make one. I read somewhere that to stop a pellet at 1200fps (at 10 meters) you need four inches of the stuff. I bought all the duct seal that the three home depots close to me had. 19lbs and I still need about four more to fill my box I made. Sounds like a lot but the box is just big enough to fit a 10-meter target. When I get it done I’ll post a picture. Thanks for all the input.

I took an old baking pan cut it to size to fit into a box I made with the dimensions from Archer Air Guns then filled the pan with the duct seal. That way all I have to do is remove the pan to pick pellets out of the duct seal.

Here is an idea, this is what I did and got carried away as usual some say its an overkill ? I now cut replacable card board  in 3 rails at the opening as needed and  great system, I can hang up to 6 targets and  move it 5, 10 and 15M in the basement if needed. I leave at 10M 99% of time.  I have 12mths+ of spent lead in it and think will be 5 more yrs before it fills up LOL:)  http://www.gatewaytoairguns.com/airguns/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=16302&posts=3&highlight=pellet%20trap&highlightmode=1#M132472
