Help with my first 'adult' airgun please...
« on: May 19, 2007, 01:58:40 PM »
Hello,

I got a cheap Crossman pump bb/pellet gun for Christmas last year. I have shot about 1000 bbs and 2000 pellets though it and mounted a Bushnell scope (that I adjusted the optics on for 20yards). I am really having fun with it. I shot only targets and plinking from between 10 and 40 yard. I have read a lot about the 'adult' airguns and would like to try one. After a bunch of reading and looking, I think the Gamo CFX ($199) would be a nice gun. I would like a 'big' scope, so the LEAPERS 6-24x50 AO Varmint Scope with Illuminated Reticle ($99). I think the Accushot 1-Pc Mount w/1" Rings, High, 11mm Dovetail ($19) would be a good mount for the scope on this gun. What do you think of my choices? Might they work well together?

Yes they will Martin. Scopes are a personal preference, but you have chosen a very good air rifle in the GAMO CFX.. I have three of them and enjoy shooting all of them. They are very accurate and have plenty of power for small game as well. Of course you will probably need the high Accushot mount with that big 50 scope..:) One point that has been brought up in a post here a while back.. Loading pellets in the CFX a little different than a break barrel. You have to turn the drum on the breech to load your pellet. If it is not properly seated, you may damage you o'ring. What happens when you load your pellet, sometimes a snug pellet will not seat all the way and you think it is, and when you turn the breech drum back it may catch the scirt of the pellet and peel it off which could get down in the seal area.. So be aware of this issue. It happened to me early on when I got my first CFX, but realized what happened and always made sure after that, that the pellet was seated properly.. Lucky I did not damage my seal but there have been a couple instances where someone has damaged it and it is a pain to fix..:) Gamo did not service the seal at first, but one of our members talked to the right guy there and since the, the seals have been available..:)

For sure the CFX is a great gun.. and best of luck.

Welcome aboard, Martin!  Good choice on the CFX, that was my first "adult" airgun, too.  However, I think you might find that scope a problem.  Because of the way the CFX loads, any scope over about 13 1/2" will interfere with the loading port.  I had a Leapers 3-12x44 full size on mine, and that was as big as I could go without blocking the loading port.  Good luck, and drop in often!

Hello Martin and a big GTA WELCOME. :)  I also own a CFX and they do make a great hunting airgun but as Gene said, watch the pellet pinch. Once you get it down, you shouldn't have any problem's with her and she'll be a fine shooter for you. Ed

The 440 is a discontinued model, but it has a lifetime warranty from Gamo and USED to sell for close to $200.

It's the same action as the Shadow, 220, and several of the newer models.

Welcome Martin. I also have a CFX and it is a great gun. Even better, alot better, after a CDT turbo tune and GRT trigger. I bought a Leapers mini swat 3-12x44 scope and its short size leaves ample access to the loading breech. This scope does have issues though. A review was posted recently explaining it's problem and I beleive it is a flaw on all scopes in this model. With patience, I was able to overcome the wierd "fish-eye" view it has. Good luck with your first adult airgun  8)

Well I ordered a CFX and it should be here next week. I am also picking up a GRT-III trigger. I skipped the scope for now because of the size concerns. I will shot it stock for a while and then pick a scope later once I have it in hand.

Thanks for your advises.

Martin stopped by here today and picked up a GRT-III for his CFX that he doesn't even have yet. He lives just up the street about ten mile in Greenville. We shot the bull for about an hour and then he said something about having to go back to work. I didn't think anybody around here worked except on their airguns. :D  :D  Anyhow... Martin is a great guy and I too welcome him to the forum

Ain't this a great place to be?????  8)

I'm starting to think he may be too smart for the rest of us :-)!  First, he orders a CFX for his first gun, excellent choice as we all know.  Then, he DOESN'T order the monster scope, and finally, gets a GRT III trigger even before the gun arrives.  Well, we've got enough pretty faces around here (nice orange shirt, Dan!), guess some brains can't hurt us too much :-).  Anyway, welcome again, Martin.  Later.
