AR2078A Which caliber????
« on: June 12, 2007, 04:54:55 AM »
I currently have a .177 pistols and rifles but am looking at the .22 for stability, accuracy and ft lbs of energy at the target(critter).

Can anyone give me some conversation on starlings and the rabbits.   I am hoping to do most of my hunting shots at 20 to 25 yards maximum.  But the paper targets will be at 30 plus.

Thanks
Matt  :emoticon:

Answered above...but will repeat:

The .22 bore makes better use of the CO2 gas than the .177, the .22 will be a bit  slower but earn more energy per shots the pellets are nearly twice as heavy.  End result is that the .22 hunts much better. The best test of a hunting gun's accuracy would be at hunting ranges...screw 10meters, shoot the SOB at 30yards.

The .177's bolt probe o-ring tends to wear and leak sooner than the .22's. the little .177 o-ring is best described as "dinky", and being so small and frail, it gets damaged more easily....which kind of sucks as you have to take the rifle about 1/2 apart to get to it.

IF there is any accuracy difference, I can't tell.  Given the time to search out the best pellets for eaither, they both seem to shoot just as well.

Why?

MAy as well add a "why" for the .22version.

To deliver 7 foot pounds of energy a typical .22 pellet needs to be moving at about 475fps.  Now given a decent ballistic shape 9not the best...not the worst) need to start out at 650fps to have that much speed left at 50yards.  A QB can easily be home tuned to deliver 640-650fps in .22.

To deliver 7 foot pounds of energy in .177, an 8.2gr. pellet needs to be moving at something close to 625fps.  To get that speed at 50yards, you'd need to launch it at a bit over 850fps. That muzzle vel. is NOT real easy to get with a QB without extensive mods (and maybe not even then).

Which is why my prefercne for .22...of cousre, all the energy in the world won't make up for poor pellet placement, but the .22 just works out to be a better hunter in this rifle.

Cal. and hunting, decision's decision's. I own and hunt with both .177 and.22 and also hunt with my tuned QB-78D.177. Each of my babies are ask to drop game atleast out to 40+ yrd's. I keep chrony updates on them which tell's me a lot about thier state of being. I've hunted everything from possum, raccoon, prariedog etc. A good quality shooter is a must and after that I focus on the type of pellet for the job, if my airgun likes it and SHOT PLACEMENT. Just my pellet's worth hehe. :) Ed

...and I completely agree with:

The .22 bore makes better use of the CO2 gas than the .177

can't argue with the truth.

Thanks for the information posted by all.  I think that I have made a decision on the .22 cal.  Very interesting information and will be very glad to see the starlings and targets recieve the pellets accurately at 50 yards.  Man, they won't know where to nest next year!!  Also from the reports and information on Mike Melick and also from the questions he has answered I am going to order from him.  Of course as soon as I get the funds out of the account so it is unreported to the Mrs.  From her accounts there are too many weapons in the collection now.

Thanks again

Matthew, You have made a good decision on the caliber..:) But the funds thing, you might want to discuss a diversion plan with Dano.. He has buying guns down pat and his wife even opens the box when it comes. She seems to be so pleased when Dan buys a new air gun..:) I am not kidding, if  you do a search here, you will find that Dano has a few great scenarios for buying air guns and making his wife feel good at the same time..:)

Your going ot love one of mikes guns. I have one already in .177 and its a damn good shooter. (if I could do it over id get a .22) but the gun is 1/4-1/2 at 50 yards  40 is what I have it sighted in for and you can drop them all in and have the pellet holes touching. I even gave it a shot at 70 yards... and well Impressive. 1/2 inch was the best i could get.

Going to the grocery store.....

.....hit the ATM, take out $300, buy at least 16 cases of ramen noodles @ $2.99 a case....really fills the bags up.  Then shop with the rest of the money till you have enough left over for one of Mike's guns.  You bring home a big load of groceries, thanks to the 16 cases of ramen noodles....cupboards are full, and you have enough airgun money left over for a Flying Dragon gun.  Get a Money Order from the customer service desk on your way out of the store.....this is key.  If you come home with cash in your wallet it will be seized, they can smell airgun money.....but money orders somehow go undetected.

Easy peasy,
Dan

that your brakes are squeeking alittle, I'll take it to get checked out. $75 per axle, if rotors don't have to be turned, of course all 4 will need to be turned. So that's $75x2, $25x4, wait a minute need a scope to, so both front calipers have to be rebuilt, $50 each, there's $350 and all you got to do is go pick it up. :emoticon:

You won't be sorry...are good guns, and really won't NEED to get inside of one right off the bat.....can save that as a project later on  (is a good tutorial on this web site). Just clean the barrel of the goop that is used to preserve (they come in on a slow container ship) the bore and go shooting.

Deal is this: overtime $ is mine to do with as I please...here stipend $ (she's a teacher) from priad workshops, etc. is hers to do with as she pleases. The "normal" money is "ours", but can be used for "gotta haves" but can't be secret.

It's worked for 28years.
