Interesting chrony experience....
« on: July 07, 2007, 10:12:42 PM »

I shot the QB78D through the chrony yesterday when Roald aka Silo came out to my place. The first set of carts through the chrony had a surprising result to both of us. It was very warm which is probably the reason why but anyways check out these numbers for the Mike Mellick Tuned QB78D .177 cal.

1st. 10 shot string CPL's 7.9 gr.2nd. 10 shot string CPL's 7.9 gr. 3rd 10 shot string CPL's 7.9 gr.

1. 855 1. 890 High1. 800 High
2. 965 High 2. 855 2. 797
3. 832 Low 3. 8253. 793
4. 888 Vel spread 133 FPS 4. 862 Vel spread 76 FPS 4. 785 Vel spread 97 FPS
5. 864 Avg. FPS 875.5 5. 861 Avg. FPS 846.15. 778 Avg. FPS 766.7
6. 916 Avg. FPE 13.44 ft/lbs. 6. 823 Avg. FPE 12.56 ft/lbs 6. 772 Avg. FPE 10.31 ft/lbs
7. 896 7. 855 7. 759
8. 836 8. 814 Low 8. 742
9. 832 9. 870 9. 728
10. 87110. 806 10. 713 Low

We ate some lunch and cooled off for a bit.....the temp cooled down a little to so I decided to load some more carts in the QB and try again here are the results of the 2nd pass.

 1st. 10 shot string CPL's 7.9 gr. 2nd. 10 shot string CPL's 7.9 gr.3rd 10 shot string CPL's 7.9 gr.

 1. 831 High1. 820 High1. 785 High
 2. 8282. 8172. 770
 3. 827 3. 8193. 755
 4. 829 Vel spread 12 FPS 4. 813 Vel spread 23 FPS 4. 743 Vel spread 202 FPS
 5. 829 Avg. FPS 825.8 5. 816 Avg. FPS 811.3 5. 728 Avg. FPS 701.7
 6. 824 Avg. FPE 11.96 ft/lbs. 6. 814 Avg. FPE 11.55 ft/lbs 6. 714 Avg. FPE 8.64 ft/lbs
 7. 826 7. 811 7. 692
 8. 823 8. 806 8. 645
 9. 822 9. 800 9. 602
10. 819 Low 10. 797 Low 10. 583 Low

Anyways it was pretty cool seeing how the gun lived up to my expectations and it was definately hitting harder than I thought. The 965 fps shot really shocked us.... lol thats 16.33 FPE out of a tuned QB78D .177 lol!!!! I dont really know what it was ... temp, cartridge pressure, I was actually holding my mouth right, all of the above??? I dont really care because the thing was shooting accurately during all 30 shots of both rounds. I am very pleased with this gun to say the least.

Hey John,

I don't have any experience with the QB78's, I don't own one yet, but those numbers look impressive to me.  I was in touch with Mike via email the other day regarding ordering a rifle from him, I may be doing just that soon.

Really enjoyed your post, especially since I'm wanting one of dem shooters real bad :)
Enjoy your new range................

WOW.. those are some hefty numbers!! Mike shure went crazy on that gun. Few questions tho.. is it bulk filled? and what was the outside air temps (roughtlyabout what temps)

OH and Jeff.... HURRY UP!!! you will love that gun. I was popping chipmunks at 40 yards a few days ago. So awesome watching the pellet sail down range and impact. Kinda creepy too concidering its doing over 800 fps.

John,   is your QB a .177,,,, with 800 FPS I would imagine my question is a stupid one, but just thought I'd ask.  I will be ordering one very soon, just not sure whether to order a .22 or .177.  I guess I'd mostly use it for birds, but I may also use it for rabbits and squirrels.  I would appreciate your thoughts/recommendations on caliber.  Also, I imagine your gun is tuned??  Thanks.............

looks like you are right on the edge of valve lock.  Funny thing is when you shoot a CO2 gun at say 70 degrees and you shoot with very little time in between the cooling of the air tube will make your velocity drop from shot to shot.  When you shoot in 90+ degrees with a CO2 gun you can see just the opposite effect when you shoot in rapid succession, the gun will cool and the valve will lock less making the shots increase with each shot, or in your case go all over the place.  I tried to chrony a QB78 I built last year on a hot day and was really frustrated.  Here's a lick to my original thread and some answers from Mike.

Try the same thing during winter temps of about 50F and watch "snow" come out of the barrel as the pellet archs to the groud....CO2 can be really funny, that's why I am switching to HPA:)

Hey John,

You, and the other guys shootin these babies sure got my blood boiling for one of these babies. I was about to hit the order button for a AR2078 or an AR2078A, I want to get it from Mike for his great tune ups, but I love that Archer "A".

That will have to wait for now, cause I got a great deal on a BEAUTIFUL Springer in 20 cal., my favorite cal...BUT, for sure, my next shooter will be a AR2078?.

If anyone has any input on which one to get, feel free to let me know ! I just like the Archer because it's setup for a scope, and has the stock extension and other goodies!

Not bulk filled was using the little crosman 12 gr cartridges. Temp in the back porch I am guessing was 85-90 degrees. I am just guessin though because I dont have a thermometer out there. Jeff yes mine is .177 but as I said before I am thinking I shoulda got a .22 hehe. And I will eventually. I knw you hunt Jeff and thats mostly what ya do with your airguns. Here is the thing... if I was you I would get the .22 cal first. I watched a .22 cal QB78 hit a soda pop can off a 4x4 at 150 yards. It was tuned of course but it did it. You know all the numbers Jeff so I wont go too far into it but I will say this. I think that the QB valving is more efficient in 22. You get almost the same FPS, while your FPE goes up substantially. And then here is another thing.... with 2 carts and a pocket full of pellets you could easily do a duck farm hunt and still have shots left over I am guessing unless you do some plinking along the way hehe. Also I think that it could be a little more concealable as far as movement goes from you. Youl would only have to pull the little bolt handle back and load a pellet in instead of making a break barrel crank or underlever crank. Think bolt action rifle here... less movement on your part. I was talking to Roald telling him this gun is a good "Break" gun, when you are shootin springers and your arm gets tired from all the breaking and cranking of levers and barrels pick up the QB and contimue shooting with minimal effort.

Bill you can always send the action of the archer gun to Mike and have him do his magic on it. Archer doesnt tune their guns per se... they mod them a little on the outside but leave the internals all stock. Just a suggestion my friend.

Dan I was just thinking it would be a pretty interesting thing to do a test with the QB. A closed enviroment test. I think I will set something up in the near future with it. Basically have a thermometer and do some shootin inside the house where temp can be somewhat controlled. Be intersting to see what temp actually is that ragged edge for max power. I am thinking like Mike said its prolly around 90 degrees which is what I am guessingit was out on the back porch yesterday. Hmmm heater and Ac in the small front room of the house with a thermometer get some consistant temps going and proceed to testin hehe. I do have a short 15 yard range inside the house lol. Ahhh more projects I am just havin a blast lol.

Thanks for the info/advice John, I appreciate it.  I think I may just do that,,, get the .22 first.  Thank you again.

Thanks John,

It looked to me that Mike does real magic on those rifles, I didn't want to hurt any feelings though.
