Looking to buy a PCP & need a little help deciding.
« on: July 16, 2007, 07:36:07 AM »

Hi,

I just got my CFX and now it's time to get a PCP air rifle. The air gun is great other than the recoil. I'm looking for a 22 cal PCP and narrowed down my selection to these three. In no real order...

  • Talon SS
  • Sumatra 2500 Carbine
  • Hunting Master AR6
I'm looking for a quiet trouble free rifle that doesn't need a bunch of tuning right out of the box. Being able to take multiple shots would be nice but isn't a big factor. Primarily the gun will be used for hunting & plinking. Any info or ideas would be appreciated.

I don't own any but I know there are some talon owners on here. The talon is by far going to be the quietest. The other 2 rival a .22 rimfire in sound but they have loads of power. The AR6 is only adjustable by the hammer single action or double action. The Sumatra is adjustable and is capable of 50fpe. If you want a happy medium about 30 fpe try the AA410ERB. Hope this helps some.

My budget is up to $700 just for the gun. Then I still have to get a scuba tank too.

I have a couple, a TalonSS and a XS-B50.  I think Leftcoast said it, the TalonSS is adjustable and somewhat quiet, whereas the other two have more power and are less quiet.  I don't know about the AR6, but I know the other two sometimes have "issues" out of the box, but not always.  Personally in your pricerange I'd be looking real hard at the Air Arms guns.  The S200 is a lower powered, but very accurate gun between 6 and 19 FPE if I remember correctly, the factory moderated version is pretty quiet also.  The S200 is a single shot, but for $99 you can add a rotary clip...it's a little wonky to work, but not bad...I shot a friends for a few hours and I wasn't too irritated.  The S400/410 is a higher powered PCP, the 400 I believe is single shot and the 410 is a multishot.  Alot of power, very accurate, maybe a little heavy for hunting, but I haven't shot one with standard wood, although I doubt it's much lighter.  For the money I think the Air Arms are the way to go.  I like my TalonSS, but it's not a repeater, it's awkward to shoot, and they aren't always great without some work...the jury is still out on whether or not I will keep it:)  It's not "super" quiet either unless you do some extra work on it.  I would say mine in stock form is about as loud as my BSA Superstar springer, maybe louder at full power.  Power adjustment with a standard 12" barrel is only adjustable until the gun is set to power level 2-3 out of 12, beyond 2-3 the gun just gets louder but the pellets don't go any faster.  I wont comment on my B50 as it is just too much work to even think about right now.  It was fun to shoot for the first 300 pellets or so, then it just became a headache.

Good luck!
Dan

Well scratch the AA410ERB it will be 800 or more with shipping depending on where you buy it from. If you really what a good gun on a budget check out the B51 that Roy from Mountain Air tears them down cleans them up and reassembles. Everything is already done for you. I think they turn 900fps and cost 410.00. It is a Daystate Huntsman copy. Good luck.

I agree with Dano on most of what he said . The Talons are nice , but takes a little getting use to shoot. They have Lothar Walther barrels and are accurate. The Air Arms are  just a level above the Talons IMO. I think mainly because of the ergonomics of the stock. You can get a AA S400C in .22 for about  your price range and have enough for your tank and gauge set . For what I've read  the .22 cal is a higher powered version than the .177 which I have that puts out 12fpe. It's a little more than  a new TalonSS . I've not seen many used AA but   used Talons come up every once in a while. It's a lot easier to change barrels and cal. on the Talons.  I may put mine back up for sale , I haven't decided yet. kirby

I would opt for the Talon over the other two, as I have heard the other two are very loud.  But, they are right - the AA pcp's are great air rifles, especially the 410 ERB.  A lot of power and quiet.  Good luck in your decision.

I went with an FX Cyclone .22. Spend an extra $100.00 and get a really nice PCP Shooter. It is powerful and shoots straight and accurate. Kirby had a chance to shoot it I think at the SC shootout. He may recall..:) I think I was shooting targets out to 65 yards with it on medium power. On high it shoots in the mid 900's....:)

That FX Cyclone  is a fine piece of work . One sweet shooter and quiet too. I loved the  toggle style bolt ; it worked super smooth.      kirby

Ya David, the bolt is called a biathlon cocking lever. I can keep my eye at the scope and cock it without losing my POV. Shooting paper at 40 yards or so is quite nice because you do not have to reload a pellet each time you shoot, with the 8 pellet rotary clip. I love shooting it but it gets boring to shoot after about 40 rounds. It shoots so accurate that you do not have to work very hard at all to stack pellets..:)

Makes a so so shooter a marksman... hehe
