My binge is approaching its conclusion....
« on: September 17, 2007, 02:00:01 PM »
...I'm rapidly running out of rifles I want.

The only ones I've got left for consideration are the .22 CFX and an RWS 34 - but I'm undecided as to the caliber and the variant (classic or Panther?)

It seems I ust got (another) small bonus at work, and coupled with some stuff I've sold it looks like I'm about there, money-wise.

Any words of wisdom before I push those last couple of buttons?

Vince, I'll throw in my $.02. I promise no "get them all" wit.

You have a bunch of .177 rifles. Get a Panther in .22 and a CFX in .22. As you know, I have a 34 in .177, wood stock, and Panther in .22. The wood on mine is nice, for a plain jane 34, but I honestly thought about trying to buy a Panther stock to put it in, I like the feel of the straight lines of the Panther better, and it just feels better balanced, and the rubber butt pad is a plus. I have a Pachmayr slip on on my wood 34 now, and it shoots so well for a 34 that I'm remiss to mess with it, such as swapping the stock.

My .22 CFX shoots so well, espercially with a GRT-III trigger that it would be very expensive to replace, would have to go to something like an HW77, TX 200, HW97 or the like to get the same shootablility. If you don't like the CFX, the .22 will be easier to sell for a better price. I won't be selling mine any time soon......

The .22 Panther will give a great, strong break barrel springer, the CFX will give you a low effort, accurate underlever.
The current stable, (arsenal, quiver?): BSA Lightning XL .177, BSA Sportsman HV .22, BSA Ultra .177, CZ634 .177, Daystate Harrier X .177, TAU 200 Senior .177, HW 97 .177, HW 50s .177, HW 30 .177, RWS 92 .177, Gamo 126 MC Super, Gamo Big Cat .177, AR2078A, QB78 .177, Quest 1000 .177, Beeman SS650 .177., Beeman P17 .177.

I think you should get a CFX .22 and have you checked out a RWS 460 in .22? Thats my next want...the 460 I mean. And then I will be looking forward to hear about what pellets work well for you in the CFX .22 and some velocity posts...we even have a special thread for that!!!

I think the CFX is next...

...to be followed by the 34, probably a Panther. But I'm more inclined to go for the CFX immediately, as it seems to be something of an oddball (only pyramyd carries it)... who knows how much longer it'll be available?

I think that's a good way of looking at it, Vince. While wearing my rose-colored glasses, I've been hoping Gamo was testing waters with the CFX .22 to see if the American market would warm up to other Gamo offerings in .22, but I guess that remains to be seen.

Go for it, and as always, I'll look forward to your review on it.

I doubt that Gamo is "testing the waters"... I suspect that pyramydair is large enough to make a limited and exclusive distribution deal with Gamo.

Gamo already knows the demand for their guns in .22 - after all, they sold them in that caliber for years.

Spoke to Pyramyd Air about month or more ago concerning the same with the Gamo CFX .22. They did say that they will probably be the only retailer of the .22 and had not heard Gamo was pulling the .22. I would still go with the Gamo first the 34 is not going anywhere.

A couple of Springers nothin to get excited about.

That sounds like the right choice.
Pyramyd Air is the only retailer for the .22 CFX, and it's hard saying how much longer Gamo will make them available.
I have both the .177 and the .22 versions of the CFX, and the impact advantage for the .22 is spectacular.
Oh, I also put Da Tuna's GRT-III triggers on both of them, and the improvement is incredible.
One other advantage for the .22 CFX is that it is considerably easier to load than the .177 because the loading tray is wider, and the pellet skirts are less fragile than they are with the smaller pellets.
You'll love it.

Yeah I got my CFX .22 not very long ago, I'm talking a week or two, and I'm very impressed.

I had it in .177 and the step up to .22 was incredible.

btw...did you ever reach a more reasonable solution to your inability to shoot your airgun without having to resort to a drive to a range?
I know that you aren't allowed by MD law to shoot within a residence, so that is obviously out, your jerk of a neighbor aside, but I had a tough time deciphering the legalese over shooting in your own basement.
If you CAN shoot in your basement, I suggest you get yourself a decent pellet trap, preferably one of the silent traps that use furnace duct seal in a wooden box, as those can take tens of thousands of hits from even the most hairy chested airguns, and because they muffle the impact, while reducing the lead dust particles.
You can either buy one of those traps fully assembled from http://www.pyramydair.com, or make one up yourself.
There is a detailed blog entry, complete with instructions and reader comments between the guru blogger (B.B. Pelletier is his handle) about how to construct one here:

http://www.pyramydair.com/blog/2007/07/silent-pellet-traps-part-1.html
http://www.pyramydair.com/blog/2007/07/silent-pellet-traps-part-2.html

That should enable you to practice, even in winter, and improve your shooting technique.
Then, you can head off to a family member's home out of town or, failing that, go to a public outdoor range to see what you can REALLY do.
Good luck.
