Quest 1000 at Bass Pro
« on: September 19, 2007, 11:08:49 PM »
I was in Bass Pro Shop yesterday and saw they have the Quest 1000 w/scope for $99.95. Is the Quest the same gun as the Gamo 440?
I know Crossman has good customer service and parts available. My 766 is still pumping after 30 yrs.
Thanks,
Arthur

Arthur, The Quest 1000 ia a Chinese made rifle. I have had one for a while. Crossman seems to do a pretty good job of wringing a little extra QC out of the Chinese on this one. The Quest 1000 is basically the same rifle as the B18, which is a Gamo 220 clone. Mine is very decently accurate, is light weight and well balanced. Th cocking effort is very nicely light on this rifle. The trigger on the quest is a direct Gamo/Theoben clone and is typically vague like a Gamo stock trigger. The GRT-III Trigger is a drop in for this rifle and is the best $32.00 you could spend on it. The scope and mounts that come with the package are not great. The scope is non-AO and is parallax adjusted for 35yds. I have a Bushnell Sportview 3-9 x 32 on mine in a Accushot one piece mount.

I think the Quest is a good value for $100.00, and is an easy rifle to make better.

The Quest is not really a Gamo clone....

...but it is a fairly close copy.

The biggest bugaboo I've run into seems to be the lockup - especially the pivot bolt. If you can get it to stay in place it's a pretty decent rifle.

I have had a Quest for a couple years now and have found that it is a pretty decent rifle. The best pellet for mine has been the kodiak match. The cpl and other light pellets just don't group in mine at twenty -five yards. The scope and mounts that came with mine would not hold their zero, and mine now wears a set of Williams target peep sights. I have a lyman 17A front sight that will be installed when I have the time ,as I don't care for that fat fiber optic job up front. Mine also developed a crack in the pistol grip area of the stock after about 3000 shots had been through it. I got to brown up a bit here and say Crosman's service is GREAT! They replaced the stock for free and even sent me free targets, a gun sock, and three tins of pellets to reimburse  me for shipping it back to them. Only took a week to get it back too. I recently bought it's brother the GI Extreme and put a GRT III trigger on it and found it to even better. Crosman has really improved the QC on those, and with their parts support it is one of the best airgun buys around. I wish that  Crosman would put the scope mount and scope that comes with the GI in with their Quest combo.

At $99.95 for the Quest, plus a few rewards points I have a Bass Pro, sounds like a good deal.  Couple weeks ago I called Crossman about a seal kit for my 766. Even though they don't stock parts for my gun anymore, they helped me locate a place close to my location that carried reseal kits for the 766.
