For anyone that is thinking of puting together thier own spring compressor,   use Bolts of a  larger diameter than you think you will actually need.    I replaced the 1/4 bolts that I built my compressor with 5/16 and 3/8 diameter bolts .   This gave me a more solid compressor.   And I used 3 bolts to secure the cut-down C-clamp.   Everything is solid, very solid.  I don't like flimsy.

The compresor that I built follows the type shown in the GTA resources.

yea I agree!!! after I first built my compressor I noticed I had alot of board flex on the base so instead of just running it I ran a couple strips of extra wood down each side to strengthen and stiffen it up..



anything you see that seems to be weak or not holding up change it out!!! these thing are under an incredible amount of force!!!

Yes, go big. Someone here posted a thread not long ago where his compressor failed with the gun still in it. He was able to shore it up but it makes you think.

Yup, I remember that one. He was lucky that he wasn't hurt.

That compresser was made using manufactured board. Partical, waffer, and oriented strand boards are not made to take bending loads like that and should never be used as the compresser base.

Build them big and strong,IMHO the primary board should be at least a 2x6 plank with hardware at 3/8x20....this should stop a moose......Bill

Yup, that was me. I still have yet to rebuild my compressor but I do have a heavy hardwood base from an old bed that I will be using :-)



It was a lesson learned, to be sure. I'm glad my near disaster will be remembered and hope that others listen to all the good advice on the GTA and if anything OVERBUILD your compressor.

I used a  2x8 for the base and 2x4 for the L-shaped receiver/barrel holder with 3/8" dia. bolts.  I routed out a groove for the modified C-clamp and put two 3/8" lag screws through it.  The L-shaped receiver holders are reinforced vertically, horizontally and diagonally with 3" wood screws 1-1/2" apart.
