Gonna pick up a Stutzen..

Hi Guys,

just been browsing the clasifieds here by us and saw a Stutzen for R1000 (cheapest new is about R3000) Phoned up the guy ( he is about 1500km away) but it turns out he is a retired gent that bought the gun, jumping the gun, for his grandson. When he got it he realised it is way to big. Dont you love it when others peoples mistakes can turn out to be to your benifit. He recons he has run maybe 30pellets through it and it is brand new. He is selling for so low cause he recons no one will buy it at it's value and it is just laying there. I have to take the plunge though and buy it without seeing it. He claims to know about not dry firing and promised it has not been..

can I go wrong? To my knowledge from reading the stutzen is basically just a carbin length cfx with pretty much the same inherant accuracy. I was gonna get the CFX but if I can get the, much prettier, stutzen for half the price of a cfx I should be shot not going for it right?

Also, is the Stutzen as reliable as the CFX?

From what I have seen and readthe Stutzen has a different loading method. The Stutzen is one Gamo air rifle that I do not have either. It seems the Stutzen, is not that popular of an air rifle. Also the cocking is quite hard. Probably around 45 to 50 ft lbs. Good Luck and let us knowhow you like your new baby.. Gene

I am aware of the different loading mechanism. Actualy I think it will be easier than the cfx. I am more worried about durability and accuracy. Any info on that?  Also, will the CDT's trigger fir in the Stutzen?

Before being a member of this forum I exchanged opinions with experts about two different make and model stutzens: RWS versus Gamo. I currently have a RWS 46 Stutzen 5.5. What I have been told is in terms of "stutzen" model, RWS' is much better, more easy to cock. I had my stutzen modified with V-mach spring and can fire TS-18 at a speed of 600 ft/sec. (average of four shots). I lately tried a gamo Stutzen 4.5 in Istanbul, which is the only caliber available in Turkey, it was really hard to cock. However still as for appearance, it is there on my mind.

was the cocking of the gamo Stutz the only thing that put you off, other than the caliber of course? I am not to worried about the cocking. Am a "large built" 200+pound bugger. I am only interested in the accuracy and durability. Then also, if CTD's trigger will fit.

I have read a few reviews from people that owned a Gamo Stutzen. To a person they all really liked the rifle. They did comment that it has a high cocking effort. It does have a pop up loading port as opposed to the BSA style rotary breech on the CFX. I have never heard about any reliability issues with the Stutzen. It has the same basic powerplant as the other 1000fps Gamo rifles. Yes CDT's GRT-III trigger will fit in it.

Yes, the caliber was the main cause. At the time I decided to purchase both were available and I made my preference for RWS. Other than cocking effort my search on the net revealed nothing against Gamo stutzen' s reliability and accuracy. It is a beautiful rifle !

My personal favorites for a scope at a moderate price with good optics, durability and moderate price are the Bushnell Banner or Trophy in 4-12 x 40 AO. They are both about 12.5" scopes. moderate in weight.
Optics Planet here in the US has the best prices on those scopes, but I am not certain if they ship to SA. Check with them and see. They carry a large line of optics, incl. Swift, Leupold, Burris, etc. at very good prices. You can find a link to their site in The Mall section here on the forum.

just spoke to the gent and sealed the deal! It is still kept in it's box. So the "few shots" sounds true. Should have it next week some time as it needs to be couriered here..  Am pretty excited!

Sounds like you found an excellent deal, 1/3 cost for practicly new, can't beat it. You could send it off for a tune and still be less than the cost of a new one and have a better than new rifle. Keep us posted on how things turn out.

Hi Mike,

unfortunately I cannot send the rifleover to CDT for a tune. Cant ship out of South Africa. I will however get a triigger from CDT and try negotiate some tips from him on how I can best tune it. It however leaves me with funds to get a scope of decent entry level quality

I must say.. I am very excited! cant wait!
