AR2078 Fore-Sight Removal
« on: December 19, 2007, 08:39:12 AM »
Hello everyone :)
I removed the fore-sight from my rifle tonight, it was distracting me when using a scope, and the barrel weight at the end I am happy to leave on the rifle (thanks for the advice a while back Ribbonstone). It usually is secured with a grub screw through to a cut-out machined into the barrel. I like the look of the weight being flush with the muzzle so now the grub is of course mis-aligned with the cut-out. I don't have a lathe etc so can anyone offer a way of securing the weight without recourse to a miller/lathe etc?
Thanks you very much.
Have a jolly christmas :)
Alan

Place the weight where you want it and mark the location of the screw hole with a scratch awl or transfer punch.  Then remove the weight and with a small drill bit drill a small dimple on the mark.  Put the weight back on and secure with the grub screw in the dimple.  That should be all you need.  If you wish not to drill the dimple place a small amount (a drip) of green Locktite in the weight and slide it on.  Within an hour it will be set.  The weight can be driven off if needed to be removed but won't slide off.  Heck, if the fit is tight I would just use silicon gasket sealer.

If you are sure you won't go back to iron, then can epoxy it in place.  Is a good place to use a cheap brand fast-cure epoxy...those are not as aggressive and are more easily removed if you change your mind (or sell the rifle and want to put it back to box-stock).  Those types will usually give up when heated to a point where the metal "spits" when water is flicked onto it, but not so hot as to discolor the metal...the slow-cure epoxy types take a bit more heat...and the metal types (the ones that mix up to look dark gray) take a good bit more.

It's how the barel sleeve of a FWB 150 was put on...whatever they used (some commercail version of LockTite) is very aggressive....that one doesn't want to let go easily.

I've used a household over to get fast-cure expoxy to let go of metal (why does the torch always run out of gas just when you need it?)...just set the pover to 300degrees...let it get up to temp... put the metal work in for 10 min (with a full length barrel, you won't be able to close the door fully, but it will still work).

Thanks guys :)
I have used a thin smear of silicon. It has now gone off and holds the weight perfectly.
That's what I like about this forum. Good solid user advice that works :)
Merry Christmas to you all.
Alan
PS. I am not going to seel the AR never ever!
