I can't help myself with the tree rats! (pics)
« on: December 22, 2007, 04:31:51 AM »
Well of course while I was waiting for the crows to show up again to feed on one of the squirrels I killed yesterday, who shows up, but another buddy of his to check out his friend.  They keep coming out of the woodworks!

He came down from the tree, circled around the carcass very quickly and then went about his business looking for nuts thinking he was invincible and this would never happen to him.  A min. later he climbed back up the tree again but not far, about 8ft up which was perfect because I was using a 2nd floor window and was shooting slightly down on him since my position was probably 12-13ft off the ground.  He finally stopped up  but he was facing away from me angled just a little.  I was basically looking at his back.  I decided to go for a spine shot although all I could see was a grey fur ball without a scope.  He was on a small branch closer to my house about 20-21yds.  A welcomed change because I don't have a scope on the 350 .22 yet, and normally I shoot them farther than that.  I squeeze the trigger and I hear a big thump and the squirrel not only falls off the tree but gets knocked back away from the branch like he was pushed or thrown.  He flaps like a fish out of water for only 2-3secs and it was over.  Then I thought to myself, oh shoot I had loaded a Kodiak for the crows!  No wonder he was knocked back and off the tree like he got hit with a bat.

Walked up and saw the pellet had struck his spine in his lower back and exited out his chest behind his arm.  You can see the exit wound under his right shoulder, not a lot of blood though.  The entry wound can barely be seen on his back and with the dark clouds overhead and not enough light I didn't even bother taking a pic of it because I could hardly see it.  I go back inside to get my camera.  I come back out 10min. later and a neighborhood dog had yesterday's squirrel in his mouth!  he would drop it.  I chased him around a little and finally after 15min. he dropped it on the neighbor's lawn.  He then went back towards the other squirrel which was 20ft away.  I had no choice but to take them both away from the area.  Brought them around to the driveway near the garage where this dog knows he 's not allowed to come.  That's where I took the pics.  Check out the empty eye socket on the other squirrel the crows were working on this morning.

Thanks guys.  I have gotten more than a dozen squirrels so far since I got the 350 (could be 15 or so), and after the last couple of days their population has thinned out for sure.  I did not see the usual ones that come out in the afternoon up the street or down the street and nothing crossed my property which a daily occurance between 2:30 and 3:30pm.  I watched and waited, not to get another one, just to see how many are still out there.  I 'm definitely have to let the squirrel population get its numbers back up again.  It's all part of good sportsmanship and conservation and the responsibility of every hunter I think.  I will concentrate more on the crows now and see if I can bait them with a plastic owl as Jeff suggested.

I 'm still trying to get that possom that moved in to the empty groundhog's burrow after I shot the last one in October. My wife keeps turning off the outiside lights before the possom can get used to them.  I cannot tell her why I 'm leaving them on because she 'll get upset, so I keep making up excuses.  It's frustrating not having the wife on your side..

Ya know ya can eat those squirrels. That's what I do with them, anyway.
Personally, I wouldn't kill the possums, because they do more good than harm. Though I hear they're good to eat, as well.
I keep hoping for a big rabbit or raccoon so I can use my .22 PCP on it.
