RWS 48 vs Squirrel at 30yds.... He Had No Chance!!
« on: February 01, 2008, 11:01:55 AM »
I found five minutes of daylight this eve for me and my RWS 48 and Bushy 6-18X40 to go a huntin'.  One clean head shot on the silhouette of this grey squirrel dropped him from 30 yds away.

Is that a Bushnell trophy?

And if it is how is it holding up on your gun.  I really want to get some better optics for my rws 460 but am not sure if that will hold up. I belive the 460 is smoother than the 48 from what I here, but how has that scope been holding up?  By the way, nice shot.  Thanks prieciate it!

I'm gonna give you a mixed bag of an answer.  First off lets say the scope has been mounted to the rifle since 94' give or take a year.  It has been back to Bushnell for service on two separate occasions.  It currently has turret oil spotting on the inside of the objective lens due to the harsh effect the springer has on it.  I'm sure one of the trips to Bushnell was to clean the oil off of the objective lens.  The other trip was for the same thing &/or possibly because I felt something was not right and I was having issues keeping it zeroed.  The paperwork from then serves me better than my memory.  One trip says it was cleaned, adjusted and the parallax was adjusted.  The other trip back has the same info marked as well as a loose objective lens marked.

With all that said, I think the scope is a nice piece of work but I have nothing to compare it to.  However I did just walked in the door and have a Centerpoint 4-16x40 in hand that I plan to use while I send the Bushy back once again.  Another thing, the RWS, the scope or the user I has always suffered from some erratic problem.  One day the gun hits it's mark consitantly, the next day I have to sight it in again.  I've never put my finger on whether it's a scope issue, gun issue, or user problem.  But lets go ahead and rule out the user as the problem.  LOL  After I put the Centerpoint on I may have a better understanding of the problem and may be more capable of answering your question.  You will find a lot more people talking good about the Bushnell Trohpy than you will taking against it.  If money is no biggy, the Trophy is supposedly one of the best you can have.

The Centerpoints are hard to find at Walmart but if you're lucky enough you can pick up a 4-16x40 for @$70.  I missed out on the deal of a lifetime when I walked into one of my local Walmart stores to see the empty spot for the Centerpoint with one of their infamous red price tags stating $25.  I immediately went on the hunt for an associate hoping they had a few in the back.... no such luck.  So after visiting another Walmart I was lucky enough to get the last one on the shelf.  I mounted the Centerpoint on my RWS this eve and tried to site it in after dark.  Due to the lack of light I was limited to 15-20 yds until I decided to try out the IR.  I remembered the boys having an aliminum can on a stick about 40 yds out in the back yard.  The flood lights on the corner of the house were gleeming off the can just enough for me to be able to see the bottom as is faced me.  The reticles were glowing a bit much even at the lowest setting, so much so that they drownded out the glow of the can.  But if I moved off the can enough to see the glint, then move the cross hairs back, BAM... dead can.  Without the IR there would have been no way to guess where the cross hairs were at.  The scope seemed to work as well as my Bushnell Trophy although I don't think the optics are quite as clear.  I also liked the extras such as the lockable turrets and the ability to reset zero on them too.  The slight weight added by the Centerpoint was so little it was unnoticeable against the already over weight RWS.  Long story short, my boy may end up with the Bushnell Trophy on his Whisper if this Centerpoint continues to hit the target.
