What's the Difference in Gamo Models?
« on: February 06, 2008, 11:51:46 AM »
I've been looking at a number of the Gamo rifles and they just about all appear to have the same power plant.  If that is the case I assume the only difference would be asthetics, right?  I have purchased two Gamos, a Whisper and a Big Cat 1200, in the past few weeks.  So far I can't tell much difference in between them.  After I get to chrony them and shoot some test groups I may have a different opinion.  But so far I am very impressed with both of them, especially in comparison to my RWS 48.  When you put them against the RWS one might imagine all that extra weight and extra money the RWS requires is nothing more than bloated German engineering.  If these guns perform well in my tests I may very well be looking for a 3rd Gamo.  What's your thoughts?

Fit and finish and outstanding bluing give my 34 the thumbs up.  RWS scored perfect 5 stars for the price and gamo i made 4 stars rws is the toyota pickup the gamo a nissan there's nothing wrong with either.  I do like my gamo 440 the stock is great, its lighter weight, fits me great.  Id really like it in .22cal though thats prolly why i like the rws so much.  If you dont have a 440 id say order one from natchezss.com $99 price is right.  I wish they still make bsa supersport for comparison, i just did old searches on yellowforum seems the r9 used to be close $220 thats was a bargain!

I was asking a similar question not too long ago, just before I picked up one of the 440's from Natchez. Most answers ran along the line, that most Gamo power plants are the same. I also did a little more looking since then and looking at Gamo.com not GamoUSA.com My guess is they have two basic levels of power plants. Standard power and high power and possibly the hunter extremes are different, they look different,  don't know. I believe you are mostly paying for upgrades in appearance and accessories, polymer stocks, wood stocks from plane to some checkering to checkering front and rear and the accessories, a wide assortment of sights and scopes. The only big upgrade they don't offer that needs to be there is a good trigger. But CDT can fix that part immediately with the GRTIII trigger. I have a Hunter Elite and the 440 they look different and are accessorized differently but the way they shoot, both with GRTIII triggers is very similar. I like Gamo products, and would recommend them to friends, and with a little work, mine have both turned out to be very nice.

The Hunter Extreme does have a larger power plant or Hurricane as it's called when made across the pond. Mine is the 1250.22 Hurricane. :) Ed

That pretty well confirms what I was seeing and guessing.  Now to decide.  I like the light weight and feel of both the BIg Cat and the Whisper I bought for my son and his buddy next door.  It seems the details and fit are a tad better on the Whisper but if they perform the same, looks don't matter much to me.  Should I spend $99 for a 440 and let Bob do his magic while adding a bit of weight to my project or should I spend $140 on the Big Cat or the Whisper and drop a GRTIII in it myself only later to have it tuned.  Oooh decisions decisions.

No decisions needed, get all 3. :) I would get the 440, just cause I like wood, then have it tuned later.

I personally don't care for the wood.  It swells and contracts with temp and moisture and has to be maintained more so than a plastic or composite stock.  Oh yeah, and typically weighs more too.

Though I love my Whisper, I also love a bargain. I would get the 440 from Nanchez for $99 bucks and add the trigger. That would be a nice rifle and could afford a decent scope or later on a tune...

Sounds like a no-brainer.  I haven't looked into it yet but a co-worker told me today he was familiar with Natchez and said since we lived in a neighboring state they would not sell to us.  That sucks if still true.

Tis true, just checked it out.  Natchez does not sell to Alabamians... isn't that discrimination?  LOL
