It's in, it works, it rattles
« on: February 11, 2008, 07:26:19 AM »
Yesterday I installed a new GRT III in my Gamo 440. I printed out the pictorial instructions from CDT's web site and went through the steps. It took me about 12 minutes, everything was looking good. Loaded it up and fired, it was just as advertised. I put several more pellets through, works great. Now I am wiping the gun down to put it away and I notice the trigger seems loose. I shake the gun and the trigger actually rattles. Its very loose to the touch from any direction when you touch it. I have two other guns with GRT III's (both installed by CDT) and they don't rattle or are not loose to the touch from any direction. Is this the way the GRT III is in a 440 or did I mess it up? Any Thoughts?

Could you have disconected the safety spring by accident which is connected to the linkage?

I pulled the stock back off. Both the spring on the outside that moves between the two detents on the safety lever and the small one that's attached to the cocking linkage appear to be in place. The safety works. Do you think there is another spring anywhere that I could have knocked loose somehow?

It should be just like the ones that are already installed in your other guns.

No, it shouldn't be loose like that if it is properly installed and I don't see how it can possibly be rattling around in the housing. It's held in place by a pivot pin, the fat pin, seated on two screws and one lever in the slot with spring tension. It is normal to have a little side play which usually isn't noticable. The first stage may out of adjustment but shouldn't be unless you attempted to adjust it and backed out to far and now has a lot of slack in it.

I suggest that you remove the trigger and carefully follow the basic adjustment procedure and then reinstall it being sure to follow the instructions carefully.

There should not be any other springs tp be concerned with unless you removed the wrong pivot pins. Only the trigger pivot pin should have been removed and no other.

It's been out, in, out and in again. I am sure it's in right. So I have now removed some of the fore and aft play by adjusting the first stage. The side to side there is nothing to be done. Using my six inch scale there's probably three one hundredths of an inch extra clearance. Overall It's a lot better after the adjustment. Still not like the two you  put in for me, but that's why you get the big bucks and I don't. Thanks for the help.

Walt, I have a 440 and installed the GRTIII blade. I had loose fit but trigger and safety functioned correct. Mine even rattled like you describe (unacceptably) side to side with safety off. I turned in the 1st stage set screw until I could see about two full threads in the trigger which settled most of the slop to an acceptable fit. Maybe its the trigger block tolerences in some Gamo models that might be a possible cause. CDT could comment on the Gamo tolerances he has experienced in 1000 fps guns. BTW I just bought the 440 last week on the $99 deal.

Jeff is right about that. I set the triggers up using a Gamo trigger assembly but like almost any other mass produced item, the tolerances can be pretty wide spread sometimes. The triggers are pretty close though usually.

Bob, your trigger blade is A1... I have it in a Gamo 850 Carbine and the fit is right in every useful dimension of use in that case, no question about it. Now the 440 situation I'll look in to next time I disassemble. I am curious...... Take a read of  my thread in hunting gate tonight. The bare gun with GRTIII trigger have passed its first test, I'm thrilled. You'll see in the photo that the result is Dead-on target for me even with some play on the trigger.

Jeff

Well I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with a shaky trigger in a 440. I took the suggestion and also took some of the slack out of the first stage. That's firmed things up a lot, but with mine, there appears to be just  too much clearance built in by the factory on this one to do much about the side to side, which also seemed to have improved a little with the adjustment. Probably mind over matter there. Over all for $99 plus the trigger I still think it's quite a bargain on a very nice rifle. Shoots great and that's what counts.

I had to do the same thing on my newer model hunter sport, so there are variances it seems. Now that we are on the subject on GRT3, is there any way to give the second stage slightly heavier pull or to have lighter pull on first stage? Right now the difference from 1st to second stage is a bit too small to my liking, i.e. I'll have to be careful in quick shots after using guns with heavier triggers.
If some is good and more is better - then too much is just right.
