big cat question.

just got back from supercenter walmart w/ a spankin new big cat. it performs well and came wit 3x9x40 scope and one peice mount. out of the bag, its coated w/ a rusty colored tar/grease. is this an isolated incident or is it common for these guns coming from Walmart and elsewhere to be in this condition? all my other gamos didnt come this greasy. it just had a light oil glaze that wiped off easily. this stuff on it is almost like spring sheild stuff but brown. the more i try to wipe it off the more it looks as if the bluing and the printed lables on the metal is fading off too.  i need feedback from you guys that whos got a walmart bigcat. what did you experience?  i'm ready to either take it back or live with it.

I've purchased a Big Cat and a Whisper from Pyramyd Air in the last two months.  The Big Cat was a gift so I didn't see it's initial condition but the Whisper was coated with this same protectant you're talking about.  I've never been into looks near as much as performance.  So after wiping the goo off and finding the gun shot well, I decided it was a keeper.  BTW, if you can afford it, get with charliedatuna and buy yourself one of the GRTIII triggers.  I promise you, you'll be amazed at how much difference it makes in shooting the gun.

Maybe it is something new with Gamo. I own 12 of them and all of them came clean except for the barrel bore. Maybe Gamo is using that Chinese binjo ditch oil...

yeah, today i took another look at it and decided to keep it and take care of the goop. i took it apart and cleaned the entire action with rem oil. it looked like rust mixed with grease. i did however get all of it off and used some silcone spray to shine it up. took care of the hard trigger. i put my own home made trigger accessory in it and its working fine. also honed out the tube, did a complete lube job, and for nowi'm using electrical tape on the guide and top hat to dampen the twang. soon when my pocket isn't so empty i'll get a new seal and a JM spring and turn me a custom guide. i guess the outcome of this situation is that i do value perfomance. who doesn't. thanks guys,for helping me think.

Got mine almost two months ago and it was clean right out of the box. good to hear it worked out for you tho.

didyour signature say rat killer? oh man, thats what i love to do. when i tell people that i have a thing for hunting rats they just laugh and smile sarcastically. they just don't know how smart and fast these bugers are. i thought i was the only one that did it. i'm feeling at home now. my brother-in-law lives out in the boonies north of sacramento and his place has an irrigation canal for the ricefields that perimeters his property. the canal has hundreds of holes that use to belong to ground squirrels but the rats came and killed them all, the rats moved into his fields and then chicken coops. his barn was swarming with the midnight gangsters. they rob him of little chicks, sometimes even full grown chickens that are just roosting for the night, wiped out the barn rafter pigeons, and ruins his feed supply all the time. this is one of the main reason i started airguning. 22 shorts were either echoing in the night and going through feed drums (plus out in the country its not a pleasant thing when a neghibor from 1/2 mile down the road has to come and tell you that his family can't sleep). i also was  getting tired of pickin up the shells the next day.

That sounds like a warzone I would love to get some of that action! Rat killing is addictive I will be at 700 by weeks end, I just don't understand how there are so many of them i don't even bait but if I did say with dog food there would be thousands of them to shoot at . I am now seriously thinking of getting the Talon SS so I could have a smaller but powerful gun that I don't have to cock between shots
