Got me a small shop started...
« on: March 02, 2008, 04:37:40 PM »

With John's help, I managed to squeeze a work bench into a bit of wasted space i have in my house between the
garage and the rest of the house.

ThenI put a couple of machines in there:

Now all I have to do is figure out how to work them and we might see some good AG related "stuff" come out of there ;)

LOL Roald, My bench for my lathe and milling machine is almost exact to the tee..:) I have that same milling machine which is fantastic for what I do. I got rid of my small lathe and bought another new one that is is much larger with a 1 1/8" hole through the chuck. It was more convienent when doing longer pieces of aluminum and delrin. The bed also is I think 24" with a 9 1/2" radious. The machines are the cheapest part..:) Wait till you start buying holders, bits, end mills, and many other supporting tools.. hehe Like you said Roald this is the life of riley being able to make things and use your imagination and carry out your thoughts to and end result. No pressure, just leisure enjoyment. And with the Air Guns this is heaven.. Did I die ?...:) Is this real? Gene

Nice start to the airgun shop Roald , I 'll be missing my big shop after my move East but I already got another shop waiting and that's kinda exciting figuring how one will set up their shop. The wife's even giving me the spare bedroom for extra airgun workspace, what a lady.:) Ed

I tried the "spare room" ... all I got was the passageway ;)
I can't complain though, at least it is in the air conditioning :)

Gene, I know what you mean about "this is only the start"... I'm spending $200
A month and am not even making a dent in my needs. I've sold my 1250 to
try and help out too...... Right now the Mill is just a drill press, I don't have any
tooling for it yet, thats whats next though, I'm just getting the mill kit form Grizzly
that has a whole set of 2 and 4 flute mills.... it's astart I guess.
I got a QCTP and a set of cutting tools. I think I'll get the hang of it pretty quick... with
help / input from you guys.

Paul, I have mine hooked up to a sky hook..:) very solid and stable..:) I do not notice that with my setup Paul.. I built it out of 4x4 and 1" ply. 2x4's between the 4X4's. My lathe is so heavy that it is almost impossible to move. Not to mention trying to lift it..lol . It took 4 big guys to move the bench into my new shop and 4 1/2 guys to move the lathe..:) You are probably righ about a solid mount but I do  not feel any vibration at all.

Hey Paul!
Yeah, my lathe runs very smoothly and it has a double set of legs under it along with a few extra cross members.
The boats out drive comes through the wall right underit and has a big box built over it. The work bench is over that.
I guess thats what helps it out.
The mill sets of a bit of vibration though, but has gotten better now that Imoved it to the end of the bench.

The only real issue I have is that when the door gets slammedshut, it does shake the work bench. This could
mess with things. I'll have to seewhat happens.

Thanks for the warnings though.

That is a nice setup in a small space...  Makes my want to "reclaim" some more of my garage.  I wish I had somewhere else other than my garage to store my junk...

:) I wish... No, it's just 4/5 horse and the lathe is only 3/4 horse.
They are Chinese, Harbor Freight Brand... same as the Grizzly ones, just a different color.

Oh yes, it'll do everything except reverse threads. With a mod, it'll even do those too though.
here's it here: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=45861

Yes, I got a dial n magnetic base beforeI got the lathe... go figure. I went to HF to buy the stuff and only
found out that you have to special order the mills and lathes, so I bought a bunch of "stuff" while waiting for
the machines to get here.
I also got a cheap 6" cut off saw and that vice. It's cool for using the mill as drill press, but I'll get something
more serious when I start using it to build stuff.
I also bought a new drill and skill saw ;-) .... heyI wasdefenseless against all those cheap prices ;-)

Good grief Gene... what are you making back there??? ;-)
Nice machine man. I have been told that if the bug bites me good and hard that I would end up with
something like that .... kinda like trying to own just one air gun ;-)

Muzzle brakes and shrouds Roald..:) I can turn them much faster and drilling is much easier. Sometimes I have to use long dirill bits and that would bog down the old smaller lathe. The nice thing about this lathe is it has a 1 1/8" hole through the chuck. Just right for the 1" aluminum and delrin round stock I use.
