Just before dark today I was looking out the rear sliding glass doors into the backyard watching a literal tree full of grackles in my yard. There must've been 200 hundred of em up there, but being protected here they are not a viable target so I just stood there and watched em. As I looked up into the tree though I suddenly noticed a few black birds with much shorter tails,,,,,, hey,,,, those aren't grackles,,, they're starlings :)
I ran down into the basement shop, grabbed the .22 XS, loaded a Daisy Wadcutter and quietly opened the basement bilco doors. Didn't even have to leave the stairs,,,,, just looked up, picked out a starling that gave me a clear 20 yard shot and took aim. Slowly applied pressure to the trigger until it reached the point where I could feel it was gonna break, squeezed a tad more and BAM,,, the XS fired.
The wadcutter hit with a loud "SLAP" and the yellow beak fell off the branch and plummeted to the ground, hitting with a little "thump". Every single bird in the yard flew away at the shot but I didn't mind,,,, the XS had racked up another kill,,, an impressive Bull starling. That one won't be mating this spring :)
The .22 XS has turned into such a nice shooter since I tuned her up,,, she's fast becoming my favorite backyard pest gun......
