Which Scope Should I Mount?
« on: March 19, 2008, 02:38:33 PM »
My gas rammed CFX should be here in the next few days.  I have a Centerpoint 4-16X40 and a Bushnell Trophy 8-16X40 that I could mounte on the gun.  I'm fond of each scope, the Centerpoint for the mil dot reticle and the Bushy for it's superior optics.  So far I've had good luck with the Centerpoint but my Bushy has been in and out of the shop since the early 90's.  As a matter of fact they totally replaced it this past time I sent it in.  It went from a Japanese made model to a Phillipeans made model.  What's your experience suggest?

I am considering the CenterPoint for my CFX.  I would like to know your impression of how well it works with yours.

I think you may find either of those too long.  When I had a CFX, I had the Leapers 3-12x44 30mm AO full size on it, and that was just about as long as I felt was reasonable.  That scope is 13.5" long, the Centerpoint is about an inch longer.  That old CFX is currently wearing a 3-10x42 Nikko Stirling Platinum Nighteater, that scope is also around 14.5", but works okay because of the angled front objective.  All of this is my long winded way of saying I'd limit my scope length to a max of 13.5" for a CFX.  I also feel that 3-12 or so is a near perfect power range for that rifle.  Hope that helps, and I'm looking forward to your review when you get your new rifle, especially chrony data.  I'll be able to give you some comparison info for a CFX with a Theoben gas ram when the time comes.  Later.

Dave

BTW, I also tried a Simmon 44 Mag 6.5-20x44, but also too long.  Great scope, though, I have two.

Dave,
Thanks for the insight.  I hope my short-necked self will be able to slide one of the two mentioned scopes back far enough to clear the loading port on the CFX.  The Bushnell 6-18X40 was previously mounted on my RWS 48 and it darn near got in the way and overhung about 1" over the loading port.  The Centerpoint is currently mounted on it and I must have felt more comfy with it slid back more as it gave me a little more room than the Bushy did.  The Centerpoint is mounted flush wit hthe loading port on the RWS now.  But if it comes down to needing a different scope, I'm good with that.  It will just mean I'll have to buy another gun to mount the Bushnell on.  There is a rule I read somewhere on here that stated you can't have a spare scope lying around more than a few months without buying a new gun to mount it on.

Actually, the rule is, you can't have a GOOD scope lying around :-)!  I have one of the Gamo fixed 4x scopes and a boat anchor 10x 30mm AO laying around, the Gamo is a left over from my springer days, and the 10x was acquired as an experiment that was only partially successful.  The thing weighs a ton and has only fair optics, had it up for sale once but no interest.  Might need to put it out there again sometime soon.

One thing I found did help, since I have fairly long arms, I added a 1" spacer to the butt of my CFX.  That let me move the scope back which made it much easier to load.  BTW, the CFX loading port is MUCH different from your 48, unless you have sky high mounts you CAN'T load it if the scope overhangs the rotary much at all.  The 48/52/54 and the HW 77/97 are much more forgiving in that regard, I would assume the TX is similar.  That said, there's no chance of chopping off a finger with the CFX is something went seriously sideways.  Later.
