Received a CFX w/Gas Ram

My new Gamo CFX with the Air Venturi gas ram arrived yesterday.  I have not had time to really do much other than chrony it and install the GRTIII trigger.  First imrpessions are mixed.  Nice looking gun that is lighter than my RWS 48.  Shooting open sights I couldn't tell much about accuracy, especially near dark.  But my chrony numbers were a bit disappointing in a way.  It chronied real consistenly, a positive, but was only averaging around 815 fps with Crosman Premier Lites.  I had hopes of closer to 900 fps like the gas rammed Whisper video review at PA showed or at least close to that of the two Gamos we have with spring power plants.  More info to come in the weeks to follow.

Glad to hear you finally got er in.  Hopefully with a few more rounds thru er mabe she will loosin up.  Keep us posted.......kinda interested to see what the gas ram will do in it.

IMHO the Gas Ram is really dissapointing in the CFX, especially in .22. According to Tom Gaylord's report and some posts here it's only pushing high 500's.

I've heard some mixed things about the gas ram.  Thinking about it for my cfx but if the numbers aren't closer to 1000 in 177  I think I'll pass.  I'm still averaging high 970s with crossman premier hollow points at the muzzle.    I'd like to hear more updates and what you find... Keep us posted.  A quick thought; try a slightly heavier round... What I'm thinking is maybe you're getting blow by the pellet and not capturing all the air behind it.  The heavier rounds seem to have better side wall expansion in the chamber.

I might just try it as it surely can't hurt.  I can also make myself a tool to make the skirts as tad larger on other pellets.  The one thing I have noticed is the pellets tend to fall into the breech and need no force what so ever to insert them.  They will go 1/32" - 1/16" in just by dropping them in and tilting the barrel down.  This is far from the case with our Whisper or the Big Cat.  The Whisper requires a good solid push of you finger nail and the Big Cat needs a lot less force on good pellets and cheap pellets tend to fall in, like they do on the CFX.

I've noticed on my CFX;  The premier crossman, rws, some beeman ammo, has a nice snug fit and the standard pelets from crossman just slide right in.  Cheap ammo sometimes is just that.

Funny thing being, the Crosman Premiers and the Premier HP are the pellets I'm testing with and the ones that simply fall into the breech of the CFX.  These same pellets fit snuggly as you mention in my other Gamos.

That is peculiar.  Well lets face it the guns are $200 new and I dont expect the same QC to be in them from gun to gun, that goes into a walther barrel :emoticon:

Hey, Robby, I realize this is a couple of years down the road from when I got my CFX, but it HATED anything Crosman, even after I installed the gas ram.  Best all around pellet ended up being RWS Superdomes, with the JSB Exact 4.52 being the most accurate.  I do think it will come up after some more shooting, but I doubt you'll see another 100 fps.  I'll be watching for more info, good luck.

Despite the velocity not being up to my hopes, so long as the accuracy is there I'll be happy.  I hope the weather holds good and allows me to start testing accuracy today through this weekend.  My RWS has the power but either it's too darn hold sensitive or I'm retarded.  That sucker will shoot extremely tight groups for one or two groups then start spraying pellets like a toy, only to return to tight groups once again later, maybe with the POI moving all the time.  I've never figured it out.

Sounds like what I went through with my 350.  Have you ever opened it up, check the internal lubrication?  RWS's are notoriously light on lubes, my .22 350 was practically bone dry.  It shot smoother and more consistently after I lubed it, but it was still a beast.  Cured me of magnumitis, though :-)!  Okay, springer magnumitis, I do like the power of my PCP's.  Best I ever got from that 350 was just under 25 fpe, my Talon SS, with 12" .177 barrel installed can just about do that.  And of course, no recoil, etc.  Later.

If this CFX doesn't come through for me and make me appreciate this type of rifle for it's accuracy and abilities, I too will be delving off into the dark side if funding exist.  As for the RWS, no, I've never opened it up.  Although it could be an option to explore now that I have a replacement toy.

I sure hope the Air Venturi gas ram  works out.  I was going to have one put in my Shadow down the road.  The video at PA makes it look like the way to go over the conventional spring.

My .22 GR CFX (2nd one from PA) still shoots 40 to 50 fps slower than my steel spring CFX. THe snap of the ram is pretty loud too.

Speed is not as important as accuracy but I didn't expect to lose nearly 100 fps by going with the gas ram, especially after having watched the video review on the Whisper on PA's website.  They compared the springer to the gas ram version and the gas ram chronied faster.  The velocites were typical of our Whisper too so this only furthered my expectations for the gas ram.   I'll have to wait several weeks probably to see how accurate the CFX is.  The other company I ordered 3 sets of scope mounts from decided to send me the wrong thing so my CFX is sitting quietly while I try to hash out returns/replacements on the mounts ordered.
