Picture of the wood for my next stock........
« on: April 07, 2008, 01:21:14 AM »
I was going to keep quiet until I got it finished ,LOL but I'm terrible at keeping things like this a secret . I found this piece of walnut on Ebay . It's on it's way to Brian to be transformed into a one of his works of art . I'm enclosing a picture of the block of Osage orange I bought ; to be used in making the end caps. I working on the shape I want and in a few months will be posting the finished stock. Almost forgot to mention , this will be going on one of my AirArms Carbines. kirby

Nice piece of wood Dave.  Looks like it's got some good figure, is the other side as appealing?  When I cut the stock for my 2260 I had a blank with nice figure, but most of it was on one side, the cheakrest side was quite a bit flatter.  Can't wait to see what it gets turned into!

Thanks Dan; and no the other side doesn't look as good LOL , in the picture anyway , but for the price I can live with it . Of course you never know what emerges until it's cut and shaped . kirby

What air rifles does Brian make stocks for, and how would I contact him?

Here's a couple of pictures of my stock in progress. The osage orange for the caps turned out not to be any good (too wet) I hope Brian doesn't mind me showing his work before it's finished . I just think it looks so awesome I had to show it off. kirby

Very nice. Is that the same walnut? The new low picture appears so much lighter. I always liked fiddlebacks and birdseye wood. When I was a kid I used to stare at the pictures (color at that) in the Herter's Catalog and dream. Never did get any from them. BTW do you do any "bedding" when the action is put in?

Yes ; it's the same piece . It'll darken once the finish is applied and the stripes will be more visible. . I was pleasantly surprised by all the stripes on the left side in the cheek piece. The only "bedding" I do is applied a couple of 1/4" x 1" pieces of sticky back craft foam under the front of the airtube , to "float" the airtube to allow any thermal expansion of the tube. kirby

Good find on ebay, sorry you outbid me, LOL, tiny world. I've got some idea what the wood might look like totally finished, not bad at all! Just today I went to pay for a 100lbs chunk of Osage Orange but it will be a little while untill it is ready to work, I did find some local Black Cherry recently, it the one to my far left,

I think the Poplar will be a table but the Cherry looks pretty good and may yeild a 3"x7+" blank of nice heart wood, we'll see.
And just many many of those AA's have you collected?

Thanks, John, I'm up to four AA 400's , 2 carbines and 2 Classics ; all 12 fpe. Best out of the box bargain out there in a PCP, IMO. This will be my second stock from Brian, so I guess I've got two more to go. LOL . It's a shame the falling , American dollar keeps driving up the prices of these rifles. I keep an eye out for used ones , but folks rarely get rid of them. kirby
