Umarex 850 won't cock
« on: April 11, 2008, 02:45:35 PM »
It has finally warmed to above fifty around here so I got out the 850 to put a few rounds through. I put in a new air source bottle and I got through one magazine. Reloaded and that was it. the rifle won't cock. At least that's what I think is happening. The bolt won't go back far enough to recock the gun or allow the magazine to be removed. Is this a common easy to fix problem with the 850 or does this call for a trip to Umarex?  I bought the gun less than a year ago so I am thinking the rifle is still under warranty. Any comments on Umarex service would probably be useful also.

Mine hasn't shown that problem, but of all the ways that could happen, am betting a safety malfunction would be the leading cause.  Bolt is supose to re-set the safety at the rear of it's travel...but if the safety is malfunctioning, then it can block the bolt from moving all the way back.

AM NOT recommending you do thse mods....but it is nice to have good pictures to help if you do decide to go inside and take a look:

Hi Walt,
I've had this problem too. In my case it has always been a pellet being withdrawn into the action and stopping the bolt being pulled back. Look at this easy strip-down walk-through. You might find a chewed up pellet inside. I realised that the 850 is pellet fussy. I just use RWS pellets now. Superdomes are great. Since then no problems and the cocking is very slick. I hope this helps. Let us know how it goes.
regards,
Alan :)

When I attempt to cock the rifle the safety does move to the rear and can be moved back to the firing position. The bolt just won't go back far enough to cock. Alan I notice you use the word easy when you referred to the strip-down walk-through. The web site warns of flying and falling parts. How easy do you think this is for a first timer? I have dissembled and yes reassembled spring guns but never tearing into the triggers. The how to site pic's looks a little scary. If I decide to give this a try, after taking off the side cover do you think I would more than likely just be removing a stuck pellet? Have you ever tried a gentle tap with say a wood mallet with any success or does it always require dissembly?

Think you can do it.  If you're careful and don't bang the gun around, can lift that side plate off without having things go zipping around the room,  To be sure, would toss a rag over the side plate once you get it loose and start to lift it.   With the pictures, you can figure out where everything goes; just study it (or take a cell-phone picture...or sketch it out on a sheet of paper) when assembled so you can get it back to that state.

Go slow...be careful...and look hard before removing anything.

Hi again Walt,
I did not mean to be flippant by saying it was easy. I think because I managed it I think it's easy. I am not much of a gunsmith....
Rib is right about the sheet over the top and taking everything slow. I think you'll be fine. Study the pics and it will be not too difficult.
I did try tapping etc but once a pellet is inside it is very hard for it to escape. I really do think you'll cope.
Good luck :)

Well I did tap gently. That got the stuck pellet and magazine back out. It actually cocked and fired one time. Reloaded the mag and same thing. Won't cock.  I found the receipt and it's still covered under the warrantee. I am going to pop for the sixteen bucks and ship it to Umarex. Hope there turn around time is good. Thanks for the help.
