Fast Deer Arrived :)
« Reply #30 on: June 27, 2008, 09:36:07 AM »
Just unpacked my newly arrived  $20 dollar Fast Deer.  No damage except for some minor scratches on the plastic butt plate,,,,, covered with chinese mystery oil of course,,,,, but it looks great.  I have to clean it up and go over it after all the oil is off, but I gotta tell ya,,,,, the stock on it is really really nice with what looks like a nice pattern and very even staining,,,, no evident barrel droop that I can visually detect and the metal looks good with no scratches or marks.  I'm really lookin forward to cleanin her up and playin with it....   Now I wish I had bought 2  :)

My two FD's arrived today as well. One had only the rear sight, the other had no sights. Both coated with a stinky oil. The boxes were torn open at the ends, so I'm surprised there was not more damage to them other than a few scratches on the plastic plate. One of the rifles had a little "quality assurance" tag and an owners manual in the box. Kinda cool items. Have not started the tear down yet, but I'm all set with the right lubes thanks to CdT!

The stock on these look very clean to me as well, with the varnish being crazy thick which may be hiding some detail. It appears they screwed the plastic butt plate on first then coated them again and again with a varnish.

Will take some photo's and post them in the China Gate.

Fast Deer Sighted In :)
« Reply #35 on: June 27, 2008, 02:24:57 PM »
Well, after dinner I took the action out of the stock and cleaned all the rest of the chinese mystery oil off the gun.  I didn't bother with the insides yet, will do that another day when I start the tune, but I wanted to clean her up and just do some shooting to see how she functions.  She cleaned up nicely and like I said in my last post the stock is really very nice and nicely stained and the metal is in good shape with decent bluing.  Just for yuks I slapped a Leapers 3x9x32 AO on her and went out in the backyard range to see what kind of patterns and accuracy the gun would give.  After getting the scope on paper I backed up to 20 yards and took a few shots, adjusted the scope,,,, took a couple more shots, adjusted the scope again, then finally took 2 final shots which went right through the middle of the 1/2 inch stick on dots I use for targets.  this was done using CPL's which the target clearly shows the gun likes em  :)

The gun cocks very nicely, no grinding or binding, no buzz or twang when fired and while the trigger is definitely stiff and requires a hefty pull it's still really not that bad.  I got used to it fairly quickly and while I will do some trigger work on it I could very easily live with it just the way it is.

I gotta say,,, I'm really looking forward to doing a tune on this little shooter cause I really like it and right outa the box she's shooting pretty darn good.  I took some pics of the gun after she was cleaned up and also my last sight in target to show the impressive groups and accuracy this little shooter is giving me.  I did the best I could do with the pics but the lighting was bad in the basement,,,, the gun actually looks nicer than the pictures show.

I may just order me another one to play with   :)

Well, I couldn't stand it anymore and just had to have one. Now that I have looked at Jeff's pictures I am really looking forward to it's arrival. Many thanks Jeff. I would rather have the rifle without sights being I am a scope kind of guy. UPS tracking states the rifle should arrive next Wednesday.

SCOPE RAILS AND TRIGGER MOD.
« Reply #38 on: June 28, 2008, 01:54:31 AM »
Heres how I made the scope rails longer also a before and after picture showing how much more loading room you can have ,It's a little work but this is a project gun and we are not  to pay someone to do it for us. And the trigger mod involves polishing all sear and sear lock up notch on the piston as well as grinding a taper on the sear this doesn't touch or change the lock up faces they need to not be changed , This allows the trigger to have full lock up when the gun is cocked and as you pull the trigger the bearing surface becomes narrower and lowers the pull making for a better breaking trigger. It will never be a charlie trigger but it will be better than it was , the polishing of the surfaces is from Charlies fast deer tune up in the Library . I would print the instructions in the library befor doing the tune it's a big help. howie

Great post and pics Howie  :)

That is a great way to lengthen the dovetail grooves.  The 3x9x32 I slapped on the rifle last night is of course to long to use on the rifle as it doesn't give me enough room for easy loading,,,, but if I install a smaller 4x32 scope on it, which I planned to do anyway, it will be just fine,,,, so I don't think I'll be messin with the dovetail grooves.  The 3x9 is nice but I really prefer a simple 4 power scope on my backyard chinese shooters.  They just seem to be the perfect size for the guns and yet they provide all the magnification I need for backyard pest shooting.

As soon as I ordered the rifle I went ahead and printed out Bobs fast deer tune up instructions,,, I'm looking forward to getting started on it.....

I think you will find that you grow to really like the deer this is my 2nd one the first went to my son and one he and I like is the deer is very accurate if you run into any problems with accuracy do a re crown My new deer is doing one holers with of all pellets the cheep daisy 500 for $4.00 in wally world every one in a while I will get a flyer but I think it's the pellets also it's not broke in yet since I only tuned it 2 days ago. My next thing to do is  make the stock nicer maybe a raised check plate with a roleover, I'm still thinking what will look the nicest. howie PS I used to fish in shinicock for flounders and fluke about 40 years ago.

Ah yes, Shinnecock,,, fished their many times, especially at the canal, with my dad before we got a boat.  The flounder fishing is poor now, but rebounding and the fluke fishing is actually very good now once you cull through all the shorts.

As for the fast deer,,,,, I really like it already,, nice little package and  the accuracy is very impressive.  I may order another one to play with and for spare parts.  I really am impressed with the groups I'm getting with it,,,, even the out of the box power is sufficient for a backyard pest shooter which is what I wanted it for,,,, but I'm looking forward to tuning her up and coaxing a bit more power from her    :)

I've just finished a complete rebuild using Charlie's instructions. Found the hardest part was sanding smooth the main receiver assembly ID. Ended up duct-taping some wet/dry sandpaper to a pvc pipe and spinning it with a drill.

Now have the stock stripped of the varnish to do some custom carving and reshaping.

Pretty dang fun really. Wife took the kids to the movies, and I just cranked away on it.

Heres the pictures of my finished fast deer it's been tuned and recrowned and this is the factory stock reworked and refinished, the target pictures is 5 rounds of crosman hollow points just 10 min ago. so you can see it shoots very good at 10 yds , I have a 4 x32 scoipe on it. howie  PS the wood trim is purple heart but for some reason it didn't come up red but a deep black.

Amazing!
How you do such beautiful work and accomplish it so quickly is completely beyond me.
