Bent Spring
« on: July 03, 2008, 03:24:04 AM »
First, thanks to all that responded to the posts about my Hammerli Titan.  I took the gun apart and immediately can see through the cocking slot that the spring is bent.  Can't see if there is any other change or damage.  Is it safe to shoot the gun with a bent spring?  I hope so since I would rather not go through the aggravation and expense of sending the gun back to Umarex USA.  Also could someone address the use of the Tasco Golden Antler scope on a hard recoiling rifle?  Thanks again.  Terry

Hey T, You might just off to send it to a tuner that works on Ham's. Who knows, they may be able to upgrade the factory spring/seal etc. I'm thinking that the Ham's are up there with the RWS quality guns so a factory spring might be all you need. I wouldn't shoot it anymore until a repair job has been performed on it by either tuner or Umarex. No sense in adding 'insult' to injury  As far a the scope goes, check out the Kermit air gun site. They have a scope rating window on that site that may answer your questions. I'm not familiar with that particular model so I really can't say if it's ok or not. tjk

Hey Terry,

I would not shoot a rifle with a bent spring, it will only make the problem worse, and break the spring, or with excessive use, wear the spring and receiver.

As for the scope, the Tasco Golden Antler is a good medium airgun scope, and will hold up under normal recoil in your rifle, however, I can't say if it will hold up under this new heaver recoil, I wouldn't take the chance, unless I wanted a new scope anyway ! It is impossible to judge the increased recoil in your gun without shooting it myself.

Best of luck, perhaps it's time to have CDT do a Super Tune, or Turbo Tune, and the spring will be replaced with a Maccarispring and seal, as well as Charlie's magic touch and lubes !

Unfortunately, Terry's Titan is not a European-made Hammerli, but a rebadged Chinese AR1000 like my TF89. If Umarex won't make good on the spring or can't get one for you, Compasseco has them. They also stock new piston seals and retaining screws.

I'm pretty sure CDT won't tune these guns, but GTA co-founder Gene will. I believe he tuned an AR1000 derivative for T-Cups back in March or April.

Thought they were made by Norica...but there aren't that many spring diameters, so a replacement should be possible from a tuner if no where else.

No, It's a COPY of a Norica...

...and pretty much an exact copy at that. Norica seals can be used, and I am virtually certain that Norica springs can too.

You can see a bent spring through the cocking slot?

Exactly what are you seeing? If you're talking about unevenly spaced coils, that's a different matter - the spring is busted.

Looking into the slot, I can see a fair amount of rise in the center of the spring - the spring is not straight as I would assume. The coils all seem evenly spaced.  There is no sound if the gun is shaken except for a somewhat loose cocking arm that has been loose from the very beginning.  With my very limited knowledge, nothing esle seems out of place.  I talked to Glen at Umarex and he said that it doesn't sound like anything that should prevent me from shooting the rifle and if it gets worse, I always have my 1 yr. warranty.  Terry

T, the way I see it you have 2 choices. Send it back NOW or send it to the Fish. If you send it back, who knows how long you will be gunless, is that a word, and you can get the same sh*t back. If you send it to Bob, you get a tack driver back in about 5 days, and deal with a guy who provides the best cust service there is. I don't know how I feel about a guy who tells me to shoot a gun with a bent spring!!!!! It can ONLY get worse!! Good luck bro!! Give it to the Tuna!!!! You'll be thrilled with the result!!!!!

CDT's already said he won't be tuning the AR1000 derivatives due to wildly variable tolerances in the guns, and that includes Terry's Hammerli. Gene has done his own and at least one other for another forum member, and has developed the capability to install different and better piston seals in these guns, so he'll be the best bet, IMHO.

When you say the 'middle' of the spring, are you talking about the middle of the visible portion, or the middle of the entire spring (some of which is hidden inside the piston)? In any event, the guide should be keeping the part you can see relatively straight. I wonder if something's wrong with the guide.

I mean the 3 or 4 inches that I can see.  It's like someone purposely bending the spring from both ends.  Does that help?  I don't know how else to describe it.  Thanks for everyone's concern.  That's what so great about this forum - people pitch in to help others with their problems.  Terry
